Illegals to Get Driver's Licenses in New York(The insanity continues!)

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer is preparing to announce a new policy that will enable illegal aliens to obtain a driver's license.

The state's Department of Motor Vehicles no longer will require applicants to provide Social Security numbers or proof they're eligible for Social Security cards, the New York Post and New York Sun reported.

Under the new rules, valid foreign passports, previous state driver's licenses and other verifiable proofs of ID will be considered on a point-based system, according to a source who spoke to the Post.

"The DMV does not believe it's in the business checking a person's legal status; it's not the INS," the source said.

The Sun said county clerks around the state came to Albany yesterday to discuss the new policy with DMV officials, according to a source.

Spitzer said last year during the gubernatorial campaign he would allow illegal aliens to obtain driver's licenses, because banning them would make life worse for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers without adding to security.

Restricting access to licenses drives illegals "into the shadows, creating a class of people with no public records," said Spitzer spokeswoman Christine Anderson in October.

After the 9/11 attacks, then-Gov. George Pataki issued an executive order requiring driver's-license applicants to show a Social Security number to prove their residency status, the Post noted.

Opponents of lifting restrictions point out the 9/11 hijackers had at least 35 licenses, enabling them to open bank accounts and rent cars.

Congress reacted in 2005 with the Real ID Act, which requires states to adopt national standards for driver's licenses by the end of 2009.

I truly believe if we would hammer the Dems on this we would gain substantial votes most Democrats are as upset about this as we are.

What difference does it make? Is someone saying they would not drive without a license?

“does not believe it’s in the business checking a person’s legal status”

Then just stop issuing licenses to those who cannot read nor abide by the laws and signs which are in English. How hard could THAT be?

The state that got whacked on 9/11 now makes it easier for terrorists to get in-state licenses...

If illegals can get them...then terrorists are gonna get them too...hey no background check

I wonder if other states can get around Faith and Full Credit provisions in US Const. if states feel that NY licenses could be fraudulent...since issued to illegals?

"Opponents of lifting restrictions point out the 9/11 hijackers had at least 35 licenses, enabling them to open bank accounts and rent cars."

Good point.

Although I'm not a New York resident, initially I objected to this action. But, now that I think about it, New York has every right to license drivers in their state the way they want. Pass a driving test, get a license. That the purpose of it! The license says, "I can drive a vehicle on public roads".

Now, as far as using it to "open bank accounts and rent cars" or anything else -- fuggetaboutit. It's a DRIVER'S license not an ID card. It should clearly state across the front, "Not to be used for identification purposes".

If New York passes this legislation then no private enterprise, nationwide, is required to accept New York driver's licenses as ID. Let all New York citizens pay for U.S. Passports and use them as ID.

The real question is will NY see a huge increase in voter registration due to the use of licenses as valid ID? Will there be any kind of mark on license to indicate the id used to get license (ie. foreign passport) or country of origin?

Likely many more voters - that are actually alive - and a bigger pool of suicide vest wearers and car bomb drivers.

“Opponents of lifting restrictions point out the 9/11 hijackers had at least 35 licenses, enabling them to open bank accounts and rent cars.”

I don’t know how it is in other states, but in CA, the dirty little secret is that illegals can already open bank accounts, purchase RE & “rent” cars and VOTE without being asked for an ID!

this whole BS is about registering illegals to vote;
they get a driver’s license then go to the next window and REGISTER TO VOTE!

How about just checking for license eligibility? “drive them into the shadows”? Puh-leeze, they did that by sneaking into the country, then stay there since they don’t want to get caught. How do such asinine people get elected. Sigh.

Assuming NY requires proof of insurance, how are they going to enforce liability laws when they don’t know the perp’s real name??

Imagine the police walking up to the address, confronting the 6 adult males living there and attempting to determine which one is ‘Jorge Gonzalez’.
What they get is “My na iz Jose He-MA-nez”.
The cops have no way of proving one way or the other as there is no ‘paper’ on any of them.

These lawmakers are nuts.

"I wonder if other states can get around Faith and Full Credit provisions in US Const. if states feel that NY licenses could be fraudulent."

Others states would have to recognize the license as an authorization to drive a vehicle in their state. They would not have to recognize the license as identification.

When you think about it, this isn't a bad idea. Currently, if you're stopped for speeding, the police, with your driver's license, have complete accesss to everything about you. If you have a warrant out for say, burglary, you can be arrested even though it had nothing to do with speeding!

The only thing the police need to know in that situation is a) are you authorized to drive, b) are you authorized to drive that vehicle, and c) is that vehicle insured?

They have no business whatsoever knowing anything else about you, even including where you live.
