TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A day before flying to New York to speak directly to the American people, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad struck a confrontational tone Saturday with a parade of fighter jets and missiles and tough warnings for the United States to stay out of the Mideast.
Three new domestically manufactured warplanes streaked over the capital during the parade marking the 27th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion of Iran, which sparked a 1980-88 war that killed hundreds of thousands of people. The parade also featured the Ghadr missile, which has a range of 1,120 miles, capable of reaching Israel.
Some of the missile trucks were painted with the slogans "Down with the U.S." and "Down with Israel." The parade also featured unmanned aerial surveillance drones, torpedoes, and tanks.
Tensions are high between Washington and Tehran over U.S. accusations that Iran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons and helping Shiite militias in Iraq that target U.S. troops. Iran denies the claims.
Washington has said it is addressing the Iran situation diplomatically, rather than militarily, but U.S. officials also say that all options are open.
"Those (countries) who assume that decaying methods such as psychological war, political propaganda and the so-called economic sanctions would work and prevent Iran's fast drive toward progress are mistaken," Ahmadinejad.
Iran launched an arms development program during its war with Iraq to compensate for a U.S. weapons embargo. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own jets, torpedoes, radar-avoiding missiles, tanks and armored personnel carriers.
"Those who prevented Iran, at the height of the war from getting even barbed wire must see now that all the equipment on display today has been built by the mighty hands and brains of experts at Iran's armed forces," Ahmadinejad said.
He is expected to address the American people directly in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" airing Sunday, and through appearances at the U.N., Columbia University and several other events.
His request to lay a wreath at the World Trade Center site was denied and condemned by Sept. 11 family members and politicians. Protests against his Columbia appearance are planned at the university and the United Nations by demonstrators angry at his questioning of the Holocaust and declarations that Israel will cease to exist.
Iran and the U.S. have not had diplomatic ties since militants took over the U.S. Embassy following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Since then, the cleric-led regime has vilified the United States as the "Great Satan."
Despite Ahmadinejad's frequent anti-U.S. rhetoric, he has tried to appeal to the American people before. Recently, he told a live satellite television show that his country wanted peace and friendship with the U.S. Since coming to power in 2005, Ahmadinejad has also sent letters to the American people in which he criticized Bush's Mideast policy.
He is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Tuesday — his third time attending the New York meeting in three years. Last year, Ahmadinejad was harshly critical of U.S. policies in Iraq and Lebanon and insisted that his nation's nuclear activities were "transparent."
At the parade, Ahmadinejad repeated his demand for foreign forces to leave the region and urged the United States to acknowledge it has failed in Iraq. Outside the 160,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, there are 40,000 troops on U.S. bases in Persian Gulf countries and another 20,000 in Mideast waters.
"Nations throughout the region do not need the presence of the foreigners to manage their own needs. Foreign presence is the root cause of all instability, differences and threats," he said.
On the sidelines of the parade, the head of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Ali Jafari, said the event highlighted the "might of Iran's armed forces to its enemies," adding that Iran is ready to retaliate if attacked.
"Iran has drawn up plans to confront enemies in the face of any possible attack," the official IRNA news agency quoted Jafari as saying.
The Bush administration is expected to soon blacklist a unit of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, subjecting part of the vast military operation to financial penalties. The step would be in response to Iran's involvement in Iraq and elsewhere.
The U.S. is also leading a push in the U.N. Security Council for a third round of economic sanctions against Iran over its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment. Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes including generating electricity. The Security Council is not expected to take up the issue before October.
"Learn lessons from your past mistakes. Don't repeat your mistakes," he said in a warning to the United States over its push to impose more sanctions.

One of India’s top ranking generals assigned to liaise with the Iranian military recently returned to New Delhi from several days in Tehran - in a state of complete amazement.
“Everyone in the government and military can only talk of one thing,” he reports. “No matter who I talked to, all they could do was ask me, over and over again, ‘Do you think the Americans will attack us?’ ‘When will the Americans attack us?’ ‘Will the Americans attack us in a joint operation with the Israelis?’ How massive will the attack be?’ on and on, endlessly. The Iranians are in a state of total panic.”
And that was before September 6. Since then, it’s panic-squared in Tehran. The mullahs are freaking out in fear. Why? Because of the silence in Syria.

All of this has caused Tehran to respond with maniacal threats. On Monday (9/17), a government website proclaimed that “600 Shihab-3 missiles” will be fired at targets in Israel in response to an attack upon Iran by the US/Israel. This was followed by Iranian deputy air force chief Gen. Mohammad Alavi announcing today (9/19) that “we will attack their (Israeli) territory with our fighter bombers as a response to any attack.”
A sure sign of panic is to make a threat that everyone knows is a bluff. So our and Tel Aviv’s response to Iranian bluster is a thank-you-for-sharing yawn and a laugh. Few things rattle the mullahs’ cages more than a yawn and a laugh.

My dream is that when his plane enters US airspace, it is escorted to a remote airfield where a waiting squad of well armed US Marshals place him under arrest for this.
BTW, why won’t all of the GOP Presidential candidates push for getting the U.S. out of the U.N. and getting the U.N. out of the U.S.?

Ahmadinejad thinks he can push his people to the limits of deprivation, utilize death squads to exert population control, and wage this expensive technological race for the nuke without consequence. He is counting on the petroleum revenues that Iran generates with its production of 4.6 million barrels per day. If there is a jump in oil prices due to a cut in oil flow through the Persian Gulf, his revenues will increase. Pipelines are in place to send Iranian oil to other points for shipment. They are not confined to access to Persian Gulf shipping and China is willing to build a oil pipeline across Kazakhstan to China. In short, we will not be able to cut off their oil revenues though blockades without help from other countries. The best option is a military strike that will take his expensive investment in nuclear development back to square one.
In the meantime, I hope his performance at Columbia University so turns off Americans in this country that they will willing to take the next step against Iran.

We seriously underestimate, or ignore, their slave-like devotion to appearances. Nothing cuts them quicker or deeper than to be ‘dissed’ by an adversary. If it were up to me I’d be handing them a never-ending string of insults, starting with buzzing their big military celebration.
We might not have the testicular fortitude to take them on in a frontal assault and make them pay for the American lives they are destroying in Iraq, but we sure could do some things to make them the laughing stock of the Arab world.
Because that was what made President Reagan what he was, a leader and not a talker. President Bush could really help his country and his party if he would just go back to some of his cowboy ways of the early years of his administration. Reagan knew what an insult the appearance of Arafat on US soil would be to the citizens of the country he loved. Unlike today’s ‘leaders’ he chose pride in his country over politics. Just like when he walked out of the talks in Iceland and insisted the “tear down this wall” line be left in a speech. Not to mention firing the air traffic controllers after warning them that’s exactly what they should expect if the broke the law and walked out. And let’s not forget his little ‘joke’ when he was asked to test the microphone and responded with ‘the bombing begins in five minutes’!
I’ll never understand why would-be leaders don’t catch on that they can do so much to lead without ever firing a shot or invading a country. Like it or not, we set the tone for the rest of the civilized world when it comes to dealing with the increasing threat of Islamofacism. Great Britain would have been much more forceful in dealing with the kidnapping of their sailors in international waters, an open act of war, had they not seen us playing with PC ROE for four years.
Nope, God bless the Gipper for being one of a kind. I can only pray that the Lord will once again send us the leader we need for the times we are in. President Bush was exactly the person we needed to handle 9-11, now we have a different challenge. and let’s pray that we get another winner.

I can’t help but feel that the millions and millions of God-fearing people of faith who trust in God to lead us and protect us, and bow their heads in prayer at churches and synagogues all over the nation daily aren’t heard by our Creator.

It it were up to me I’d go after his oil producing capabilities and add insult to injury by making sure that when the price of oil goes up because of our actions his country has no way to cash in on the bonanza. Just think how agonizing it would be for his regime, which is super-dependent on its oil revenues, to see the price go up and them not be able to export a single drop of the stuff!
