Argentina asks Iran to help in 1994 bombing probe

Sep 22, 2007

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentine President Nestor Kirchner on Saturday asked Iran to answer petitions for arrests and information in connection with the 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural center, state news agency Telam reported.

Argentina has accused former high-level Iranian officials in the bombing in Buenos Aires and last year asked for their arrest. Iran denies any involvement in the attack.

In a speech set for Tuesday at the U.N. General Assembly, Kirchner is expected to criticize Iran for failing to collaborate in the investigation of the blast that killed 85 people and injured more than 200.

Iran's top diplomat in Buenos Aires told Clarin newspaper this week that if Kirchner made such a speech at the United Nations, it would be interpreted as a sign that Argentina supports war against Iran.

"For our country, this assembly is very important, it will show which countries are for or against war. It is possible that if President Kirchner accuses Iran, many countries will interpret Argentina as being for war," Mohsen Baharvand told Clarin.

Iran is embroiled in a standoff with the West over its nuclear ambitions and is under U.N. sanctions. The United States says Tehran wants to make bombs, but Tehran denies that and has threatened to hit back at regional U.S. interests if attacked.

In response to Baharvand's comments, Kirchner asked Iran to "answer the petitions that have been made" by Argentina for arrests and information.

"Just as I strongly defend multilateralism and strongly reject the invasion of Iraq, I also ask that justice functions between all countries," Kirchner said.

Telam said Baharvand went to Argentina's Foreign Ministry on Friday for a meeting after he was asked explain his comments.

The bombing of the AMIA Jewish center occurred two years after an explosion destroyed the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires and killed 29 people. Neither attack has been solved.

I would be pleased to see our “ambassador” to the United Nothing raise similar charges vis a vis Iran’s current proxy war against us in Iraq and I’monaJihad’s role in his attack on our embassy. I doubt that our State Department’s empty suits could be pumped up with enough air by then.

I have a lot of respect for our Ambassador Khalilzad. We’ll see what he has to say.

“Argentina asks Iran to help in 1994 bombing probe”

What a really good idea.

Let’s ask 60 Minutes, Colombia University and the UN ask Iran to help in this investigation, too.

Argentina is a nation of immigrants. Dissident Alireza Jafarzadeh’s book of last year: “The Iran Threat” excerpted an Iranian secret memo one of his sources provided him:

“The estimated number of Arabs who have migrated to Argentina are around 400,000; about 250,00 of them are Muslims. Most of the Muslims who are in Argentina have come from countries like Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and other Arab countries. It should be stated that in the past few years, due to Islam’s advancements in the world, in particular the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, there has been a major change among them...”

The Buenos Aires blasting of Argentine-Israeli Mutual Association (AIMA) was the culmination of a vast methodical two-year covert operation. They apparently also found it easy to hire local help...

“The authorities also gained insight from an Iranian defector named Abolqassem Mesbahi, who, like my sources in Iran, affirmed that the mission was personally directed by Khamenei and that Rafsanjani was also involved. Mesbahi also told the authorities that the regime paid $10 million to Argentina’s president at the time, Carlos Saul Menem, as hush money; Menem denies it. A former Argentine police commissioner who had been jailed during the investigation also told the authorities that he and four of his brothers each received $500,000 as payment for outfitting a van with a bomb. The investigators surmised that payments of this size were too large for an individual terrorist group and could come only from a government-sponsored operation—adding to the mounting evidence about Iran’s involvement.”

All things considered, I rather do not expect the Argies will be getting much in the way of co-operation. Nope. No way. Nada.

Iran's top diplomat in Buenos Aires told Clarin newspaper this week that if Kirchner made such a speech at the United Nations, it would be interpreted as a sign that Argentina supports war against Iran.

This is similar to what Charles Manson used to do. When people would criticize his behavior, he would take out a pistol and hand it to the critic. "You don't like me? Okay, go ahead and shoot me." Which of course, the person, being civilized, never would.

Basically the predator's contemptuous opinion of civilized people in action. That's what Iran is demonstrating here.
