This reminds me of an incident when I was active duty EOD.
In mid 80’s my EOD team responded to a munitions accident with a base ejecting artillery shell that used ADAM’s mines, very small wedge shaped sub munitions that eject over a battlefield from a arty round.
The projo doesn’t explode it fires a proximity fuze and spews the little sub-munitions all over the ground.
Anyway the round went off in a test facility , and killed two of the workers and a third was en-route to hospital in a Helicopter when we did a quick count of the sub-munitions it was determined that 3 were missing.
Helicopter was notified and met by 2 other members of our team on the hospital landing pad. One of my techs removed the sub munitions on the hospital landing pad with the aid of 2 former USAF surgeons. My troop said the Doc’s in Trauma baulked when the word went out an these two Veteran surgeons were in the hospital and went up to help. One of our techs worked with the 2 surgeons and a surgical nurse and took out those last 3 sub-munitions that had impaled into the workers body.

A GREAT story. Think I had a little allergic reaction while reading it, though...my nose was all stuffed up and my eyes started to leak a bit. :-)
I’m surprised and pleased that this was reported in the MSM, and hope it has the power to open some people’s eyes about the bravery and heart of America’s soldiers.
To: paulat
I read the whole story. It’s amazing there was an Angell there.

Guenevere, it was in the “Related News” section on the same page as the linked ABC News story (bottom right/pictures/Saving Private Moss). I think it may have been the last picture in the slides. There was a picture of Oh and his bride along with the caption.

Standing on the street outside Walter Reed every Friday night is such a small thing; how can any of us ever pay our troops the respect and gratitude that they deserve, and that we all owe them, for the job they do for us? We are truly Blessed to have such good and kind
and human heroes defending us.
God Bless them, each and every one.

The surgeon in the Vietnam incident was Air Force Brig. Gen. James Humphreys. He had previously commanded Wilford Hall Hospital at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. My dad was his deputy commander there. General Humphreys was a great man and a great horseman. He used to ride with us kids at the base stables. We were not surprised at all when he volunteered for the surgery. He was that kind of man.

The video at http://www.armytimes.com/news/2007/09/marine_rpg_moss_070922w/ is just awe inspiring. “Because Moss was looking at me and breathing.” That’s a reason to be a surgeon. The best reason to be.

The video at http://www.armytimes.com/news/2007/09/marine_rpg_moss_070922w/ is just awe inspiring. Because Moss was looking at me and breathing. Thats a reason to be a surgeon. The best reason to be.Watching them pull the missle out of his flesh wound was unbelievable. All of us hope that if we ever fall from a ladder, get in a car wreck or have some other grave accident and are unconscious, that some surgeons and techs will care enough. This video shows the deeply loyal mentality of the military possibly able to do what they do because the malpractice lawyers are not breathing down their necks.

Absolutely amazing story! And I am so-o-o-o thankful that instead of facing court martial, the troops who violated the “rules” and risked their lives to save their brother-in-arms were recognized for their bravery. Note that it took 18 months for us to find out about this awesome display of “love for their brother”. And yes, the video of the extraction was incredible!

“Does anyone remember the ARVN soldier with the mortar round stuck in him that was removed by American doctors in a field hospital? The solider was surrounded with four walls of sandbags. Then, reaching through ports left in the sand bags the doctors removed the mortar round.
Bravery runs in the veins of Americas fighting forces from generation to generation. The same cant be said for our politicians.”
If this was the incident that happened in late 1968 or 1969 at the Army Hospital (4th field, I believe) just south of TSN, I watched the surgery and joined in the applause when it ended.
It was, however, a 40mm grenade in the eye socket. I never knew who the patient was. The operation was conducted in a parking lot and we watched from a nearby balconey.

There was a term coined during the Second War in the Pacific by Admiral Nimitz.
Uncommon valor. Surely each player in this story earned that distinction. Everyone was in the right place at the right time as well. God allows things to come to past, to HIS glory.

So many men and women that serve with true honor and often distinction. As I just mentioned to Albion Wilde, this story conjures up what Admiral Nimitz refered to many years ago.
Uncommon valor. All put their lives on the line to save this soldier. God of course was happy to oblige their efforts.

For his wounds in combat, Pvt. Moss had a Purple Heart coming. But he wanted to wait. It was important for him to be able to stand to receive it.
He underwent four major surgeries followed by intense physical therapy. Pvt. Moss' recovery was steady
moving from a wheelchair to a walker to a cane.
"I wanted to walk and get my medal, I wanted to stand up, to let them know I fought hard to get where I came from," Moss said. "They say 'Army Strong' [and] I wanted to be an example of that, and I was. So I stood up, I walked over there and got my medal."
Pretty amazing young man, and the men who worked to save him were amazing as well.

What brave men. And to think Kerry was given a Purple Heart for a paper cut type wound. What a difference in men and bravery. My brother caught a little bit of shrapnel in Vietnam. It was very minor and required cleaning and band-aids. I asked him why he did not get a purple heart? He said he would have been "embarrassed to ask for it" with such a minor injury. This puts John Kerry in perspective.

I continually have to readjust my own beliefs. Too often I am suckered into believing one thing, just to find that it was not entirely accurate. Sometimes, I see that there is a certain correctness in differing viewpoints.
But the democrats, they have been getting loonier by the year. And their undermining of the troops while the troops are getting shot at is pure poison.
But my daughters read widely and try to interpret. I just hope they can use their minds and not follow the pied pipers of this world.
