NO LICENSES FOR ILLEGALS
boblonsberry.com ^ | 09/24/07 | Bob Lonsberry

For its size, New York gets a disproportionately low number of illegal aliens.

Mostly that's because illegal aliens go where they can get jobs, and thanks to suffocating taxes and regulations, there's no work in New York.

Sure, the farmers are doing all they can to bring in illegals – it's a lot easier to pay aliens under the table than it is to offer citizens market wages – but still the majority of New York lags behind much of the country when it comes to the social rot resulting from illegal immigration.

Fortunately, the governor is trying to change that.

On Friday, he said that illegals can now get drivers licenses.

Just walk up, pass the test, show any kind of document from anywhere, and you've got a bona fide New York State drivers license.

That makes New York the first large state to give illegals licenses. That makes New York a magnet for illegal aliens.

Which is only fitting.

After 40 years of being a welfare magnet – offering higher benefits and more entitlements and drawing untold numbers of out-of-state hogs to the New York trough – the Empire State has finally decided that, when it comes to welcoming illegal aliens, it will take a back seat to no one.

The governor says this will make our roads safer.

Experience in the tiny handful of other states that have made this mistake shows no such increase in safety for the motoring public.

See, people whose first act in your country is breaking the law, tend to have a pretty low view of all law. If you decide the immigration law doesn't apply to you, it's pretty easy to decide that the traffic law doesn't apply to you, either.

Which is one of the nationwide plagues resulting from illegal immigration. The scenario of an illegal – usually drunk – driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, getting in a wreck in which somebody else gets bunged up or killed, and then fleeing the scene of the accident and sometimes the country, has become completely common.

When you ignore one aspect of the law, and tell people they don't have to obey it, you invite them to scoff at all your law – including the vehicle law that protects your family's life.

The governor says that giving licenses to illegals will cause them to obey traffic law. What a crock. Licenses cost money. Illegals know they can drive without them and likely won't get caught. They're not going to get a license just to be nice.

Ditto for vehicle registration, vehicles taxes and insurance.

For the governor's pipe dream to come true, the average illegal alien would have to decide that he now wants to dramatically increase the cost of driving for himself.

And that simply is not going to happen.

But illegals will snap up drivers licenses. They won't engage any other aspect of the highway law, but they will get drivers licenses. In fact, if experience in other states is an indicator, a great many illegals will get licenses. If past experience is any teacher, illegals will come to New York just for the license, and many will do so fraudulently.

Why?

Because a drivers license is the official ID in America. And with one you can do about anything. An innocent example of that is banking. With a drivers license most of the banking system opens up to illegals.

A not-so-innocent example is airlines.

What does it take to get on an airliner in America?

A drivers license.

What stops illegal aliens from flying on most planes in America right now? Usually, it's the lack of proper ID.

With a New York drivers license, the commercial air travel industry is laid bare for illegal aliens.

Who I guess we're really supposed to hope are just illegal aliens.

It seems odd to me that a state that had two jetliners fly into its buildings would open the door for some 12 to 20 million law breakers to walk right onto commercial jets.

What is to stop some jihad boy from flying to Mexico from whatever corner of the stanky Middle East he calls home and then walking across the river and making his way to New York to get a drivers license so he can get himself an airline seat? If terrorist infiltrators among the illegal alien population are present in a million-to-one ratio, that means they've got more than enough in our country to pull off another September 11.

Further, there is just the plain-old common sense reaction. Namely: You don't give illegal aliens legal benefits.

If a class of people say the law does not apply to them when it restricts them, they cannot with integrity later say that it does apply to them when it benefits them. Illegal aliens should not get legal benefits.

When you reward people for doing wrong, you invite chaos.

New York should not accommodate and reward illegal aliens and their employers. Yes, their employers. Now they can get licenses and drive employer vehicles without incurring extra liability to their boss.

The governor is wrong.

Illegal aliens should not have drivers licenses, from New York or any state.

And if the governor cared about the state and its interest, he would announce that the state police were launching a crackdown and would track down and turn over to the feds all the illegal aliens they could find.

But that's not happening.

We're being invaded, and the governor is holding the door open to make it easier.

Illegal aliens should not have drivers licenses, from New York or any other state.

Please drive by the Home Depots, Lowes and 7-11's and tell me there arent any illegals looking for work. You just might be very surprised.

“Lonsberry is spot on again.”

I guess.......as long as you discount the fact that New York (city and state) is over run with illegals.

Tell Bob that maybe there’s no work for illegals up in Raa-cha-cha (since there’s no work for anyone up there) but have him come down the City and ask for Chinese take out. Or see who makes the beds in the hotels. Or picks whatever they grow in the fields of Long Island.

Here’s my take: Leadership on the left and right is saying these people are here and we can’t possibly deport 10-20 million so we may as well legalize them. OK, then what steps are being taken to create respect for our laws? They don’t respect our laws because they were all but invited in and are immediately given major benefits law-abiding citizens can only dream of. This includes free health care, housing, food and advanced education. Fine. Seal the border now so no more come in and and create programs that earn each level toward citizenship, starting with a requirement to learn english. No habla ingles then no benefits.

This should be the only true freebie these people get. After that, they must apply for each seperate benefit in English without an intepreter, maintain employment and given a guest worker card with a temporary social security number which expires in 36 months. All must register and have this temporary SS for employment.

In that time full time employment must be procured and strict enforcement must be maintained on following the law. Any indictment of a felony, two misdameanors of any kind within year one is grounds for immediate deportation. When deported, they are dropped in the middle of nowhere, at the most southern point of Mexico. Each benefit is awarded in steps. Once English is learned & full time employment procured then housing is offered and a medical discount card provided but no food, college or welfare cash. If they make it past the three years and fulfill these requirements then they have access to other social services like any other citizen. Repayment of medical coverage would be a necessity within 5 years or deportation commences. After the three years the illegal alien receives full citizenship and such permanent ID’s such as a social security card and drivers license can be issued.

Upstate's rapidly depopulating.

Guess this is the only way the state's 'Rats and RINOs can get anyone to live here.

Note to the nation: Keep voting for 'Rats and RINOs and all this, too, can be yours...

What is this guy smoking? Has he ever been to a pizzeria, the kitchen of a restaurant (any cuisine) or seen who does the landscaping in suburbia in the downstate area? Mostly Mexicans and Ecuadorians!

Downstate has a very wealthy economy thanks to finance and fashion. Upstate is appalachia with worse weather.

All he said was that it was proportionally less overrun than other states.

Maybe the answer to your question is in the first sentence of the article. The sentence right before the one you chose to quote.

For its size, New York gets a disproportionately low number of illegal aliens.

He never said there aren't illegal aliens in New York. He said there were proportionally less in New York than in other states.

That doesn't mean that New York doesn't have illegal aliens, it just means that they have less than other parts of the country.

However, the legislature and the governor appear to be determined to change that and encourage even more illegal aliens to come to New York state.

What he was telling you is that it is likely to be getting worse soon, so if you think it is bad now, you're likely going to be even less happy with the situation in the not so distant future.

"Upstate's rapidly depopulating."

I made several business trips to Jamestown, NY a few years back.

What an utterly depressing place.

This is by far the worst aspect of the program.

Given the extensive documentation necessary to get it, and the fact of the picture being taken in the DMV office by DMV personnel and immediately printed on the license by the same DMV personnel, my Virginia driver license is a better, more secure proof of legal residency (citizenship, in my case) in these United States than is my passport.

People see Manhattan's wealth, but forget that the schlepps (largely immigrant, often illegal) go home to prewar walkups in Queens and the Bronx, where they pay $1500 to share a 1 bedroom with five of their buddies.

I used to live across from a Pizzeria in the Bronx where the main baker was a guy from Puebla. He told me that his two brothers had to get out of New York because the rents were too high relative to the income they received. By comparison, getting a rental in Texas, Arizona, or the inland empire of CA (to say nothing of dixie) are quite a bargain.

DOWNSTATE NY is NO place to be poor, legal or illegal, immigrant or native born. The once generous bennies of the Rockefeller/Lindsay era (both RINOs, btw) went largely bye-bye thanks first to the austerity of the Carey years (in response to the near bankruptcy of the city) and the welfare reform of the 90s. Unfortunatly, the state likes to hand out medicaid and SCHIPP like Jesus handed out loaves. Nevertheless, the high cost of living, and the growing reluctance of landlords to take section 8 mean that the poor will continue to live a miserable existence or move upstate or the Pennsylvania (which many of the native born underclass have been doing for 15-20 years).
