Run, Al, Run: If Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize, will he run for president?
Slate ^ | September 24, 2007 | Christopher Hitchens

I am occasionally asked why it is that so many Europeans display reflexive anti-Americanism, and I force myself to choose from a salad of possible answers. One of these is the resentment that I can remember feeling myself when I lived in England in the 1970s: the sheer brute fact that American voters who knew nothing about Europe (and cared less) could pick a president who had more clout than any of our elected prime ministers could exert. America could change our economic climate by means of the Federal Reserve, could use bases in Britain to forward its policies in Asia or the Middle East, and all the rest of it. Americans could also choose a complete crook like Richard Nixon, or a complete moron like Jimmy Carter, and we still had to watch our local politicians genuflect to the so-called Atlantic alliance.

Nowadays, this bothers me slightly less than it used to do. (George Bush at his worst is preferable to Gerhard Schröder or Jacques Chirac—politicians who put their own countries in pawn to Putin and the Chinese and the Saudis.) But I can still feel the old pang gnawing away. And I can still sense the European instinct for revenge or, to phrase it another way, for the chance to influence U.S. politics in return. One of the ways in which this influence can be exerted is the award of the Nobel Peace Prize. (And not just the peace prize, either; the so-called "prize" for literature has been awarded quite openly to figures who earned their reputations as enemies of the American imperium, just as the laurels bestowed on Jimmy Carter were accompanied by explicit remarks from Scandinavia to the effect that this might put a spoke in Bush's wheel.)

I'm sick of the Norweigans interference in out elections. Last time out they gave the NPP to Carter. I think we should retaliate by raising a few million dollars and runnning ads in their papers for the Conservative in the next Norweigan election.

I was writing about this scenario on another thread over the weekend.... not that I think Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize for reckless bloviating about global warming is a reasonable thing..... but the Nobel committee in recent years has selected Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter, the IAEA clown, and ARAFART for heaven’s sake, so choosing Gore would be easy for them.

When/if Gore is the new Nobel Peace Prize winner (we’ll know on Oct. 12), then he will receive more glowing PR than he’s ever had in his life. Many Democrats who are queasy about the Hillary-Obama-Edwards choice may be very open to a “draft Gore” campaign, and he will be more than willing if he thinks he has a serious shot.

It’s all a very plausible scenario now, however unlikely it may have seemed a year or two ago.

The one thing I would LOVE about this scenario is the thought of Shrillery raging and throwing things as she sees her frontrunner status crumble..... and it would be fun to see the Witch trying desperately to stop a Gore movement.

For all of the hyperbole showered on America for a "loss of respect and/or standing" in "World opinion" (whatever that is)

Good point. There is, of course, no political community known as "the world", and for most inhabitants of Planet Earth, expressing their opinion about anything, ever, can only cause trouble or worse.

Obama’s inability to develop traction certainly makes it easier for Gore to get back in.

I would love to see two Tennesseans running against each other. Thompson would make a bigger fool out of Gore than he already is. Gore couldn’t carry his own district or state in 2000.

Is it not a testament to the power of the media to form opinion that Al Gore might be considered a candidate for a Nobel Prize?

I tend to think that Al enjoys the status conferred by this preposterous reputation, and he must know that running for President would assuredly endanger its standing. My take, then, is that he’ll refrain from running.

Too bad: what entertainment his candidacy would provide!

Perhaps it was simply that we US voters have nicer looking teeth?
