Isn’t it custom to continue referring to them as presidents? Seems like that is generally the rule for senators and such as well.

I think so, unfortunately in the cases of Clinton & Carter. Newt is still called Mr. Speaker by some I believe, like on H & C.

Yes. OTOH, the MSM seldom, if ever, refers to Bush as President Bush.
