Dan Rather stands by his story
Salon.COM ^ | 9/27/07 | Sidney Blumenthal

Posted on 09/27/2007 2:48:20 PM PDT by Phsstpok

His lawsuit will attempt to show that CBS tried to suppress the report on Bush's National Guard Service and the Abu Ghraib abuses.

By Sidney Blumenthal

Dan Rather's complaint against CBS and Viacom, its parent company, filed in New York state court on Sept. 19 and seeking $70 million in damages for his wrongful dismissal as "CBS Evening News" anchor, has aroused hoots of derision from a host of commentators. They've said that the former anchor is "sad," "pathetic," "a loser," on an "ego" trip and engaged in a mad gesture "no sane person" would do, and that "no one in his right mind would keep insisting that those phony documents are real and that the Bush National Guard story is true."

Once the court accepts his suit, however, launching the adjudication of legal issues such as breach of fiduciary duty and tortious interference with contract, it will set in motion an inexorable mechanism that will grind out answers to other questions as well. Then Rather's suit will become an extraordinary commission of inquiry into a major news organization's intimidation, complicity and corruption under the Bush administration. No congressional committee would be able to penetrate into the sanctum of any news organization to divulge its inner workings. But intent on vindicating his reputation, capable of financing an expensive legal challenge, and armed with the power of subpoena, Rather will charge his attorneys to interrogate news executives and perhaps administration officials under oath on a secret and sordid chapter of the Bush presidency.

Did you know that, according to Sydney Blumenthal in his latest Slate rant, you are a Rove operative?

Here's what LGF highlighted out of this piece:

Within minutes of the conclusion of the broadcast, conservative bloggers launched a counterattack. The chief of these critics was a Republican Party activist in Georgia. Almost certainly, these bloggers, who had been part of meetings or conference calls organized by Karl Rove's political operation, coordinated their actions with Rove's office.

Yep. I’m sure that there are scores of liberals at CBS who will be glad to testify that Bush was behind all this. Afterall, Bush is behind everything, isn’t he?

No bias there. At least this is objective and fair reporting about bias in the media.

The Dan Rather lawsuit is nothing more than a shakedown. Rather is threatening to reveal skeleton’s in CBS’ closet in order to get CBS management to cave and settle out of court with a fat payoff.

Blumenthal’s piece reads like a threatening screed written by Rather himself [hmmmmmm].

Whatever.

Odds are, Rather is striking some nerves with the threats of being able to dig deep with legal authority [Mapes is making the same assertions].

So CBS will indeed cave [cuz they probably have quite a few skeletons that Rather is intimately aware of] and Dan Rather will be championed by the left as having been right about the phony documents and heralded as a hero sacrificed on the alter of corporate|Republican dirty tricks.

We’ll be hearing something along those lines for the next twenty years.

And the beat goes on...

No one should take seriously an article written by Squid Blumenthal, and published on Salon. (I thought Salon had dropped through the floor and disappeared financially, like Air America will when it runs out of liberal suckers with a million dollars to waste.)

There are far more honest, and well-written pieces on this subject, including the one below which appeared on FR and several other points around the Net.

The idea that CBS News is a tool of the Bush administration, or played down the Abu Ghraib scandal, is laughable on its face. Blumenthal was one of the biggest scumbags in the Clinton administration, and he hasn’t changed a bit.

As I said in my article this week, as soon as I read Buckhead's famous comment on FR I smacked my forehead and said, "Of course he's right. These are forgeries." I also have a background in print media publications.

Like a couple other "experts" who checked in on or through Little Green Footballs the following morning, I had sufficient background to recognize why these documents allegedly from the 70s could not have been produced except in a well-financed print shop of that day.

Now, with computers and their typesetting programs, and laser printers for the output, those 70s' memos can be produced by anyone, anywhere, including all Air National Guard offices in the known universe. The flip back and forth graphic shows exactly that.

But not even the most expensive and sophisticated IBM Selectrics (which the TANG did not have anyway), could have produced those memos.

Kudos to Buckhead because he was the first to spot the forgeries. Not because he was prepared by Rove to make the attack, but because he was armed with the facts and he paid attention to the details.

AFTER Buckhead, I saw the same thing. However, my connection with Karl Rove is that I've seen him a few times on TV. LOL.

for his wrongful dismissal as "CBS Evening News" anchor

I'm not a lawyer and I don't play one on t.v. but this may come up if it goes to trial;)

Rather spoke of his decision to step down to more than 100 staffers in the CBS newsroom on Tuesday afternoon. In brief remarks, the newsman said that he had considered retiring since the late 1990s. He added that the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attack prompted him to put aside such thoughts.

I think Gunga Dan is crazy like a fox. They will settle for an undisclosed sum is my prediction.

Rather is a pathetic loser...and always was. Given that Walter Cronkite was a tough act to follow, shallow Dan had enough time to make his own mark in the world of news journalism...and he did. Dead ass last every year in the network TV news business. Now he’s becoming even a bigger jerk by trying to prove he wasn’t a jerk in the first place. Still a pitiful jerk...and EVERYBODY knows it!!!

Why he is saying "They were never proven fake" is unreal. Even the Selectric could'nt do proportional spacing. He is trying to save his name and blames his contemporaries with not doing the fact checking. The funny thing is he still claims the documents are "accurate". Well Mr. Rather give me the originals (if they exist)!
