An Unhappy Marriage

Every political observer knows of the far left's hostility toward President Bush, his war policies and anyone who supports either or both. But has it occurred to you how much the base must also distrust most of the major players in the Democratic Party? That's one thought I took away from this week's Democratic presidential debate.

The relationship between the base and the party's candidates and officials is like a forced marriage characterized by a mutual dependence and reciprocal distrust.

The base, typified by groups like MoveOn.org, has no choice but to accept the Democratic Party as its vehicle to promote the liberal policy agenda. There is no other viable alternative. In turn, party leaders must cater to the far left because of its indispensable funding and grassroots contributions.

While there are many blind followers in the base, there are also plenty of savvy operators who are fully aware of the massive deception Democratic leaders have perpetrated on the American people concerning Iraq.

They're too shrewd not to understand that John Kerry, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, to name a prominent few, have been lying through their teeth in saying they were duped into supporting the Iraq war resolution.

I disagree with the writer that the base is
“typified” by Moveon.skank. MoveOn has one of the loudest mouths but that doesn’t mean they are typical of the base.

But I do agree that they must be pretty sore about the dims not rushing to pull out of Iraq. WE knew the dims wouldn’t pull out, they just wanted the votes.

Every political group is composed of believers and followers. When the group loses, they each blame each other for either being too radical, or for “not believing” enough.

It’s true enough here, but we’ve had pretty good fortune not to be overly divided about certain things.

I think the admins understand this.... the importance of simultaneously being populist while truly conservative, which are not always compatible goals.

Is Moveon the husband or the wife?

For that matter is Hillary the husband or the wife?

Definitely right.

Age is an interesting factor, for one. The dems have lost plenty of boomers/ex-hippies to things like: disinterest, changing values (to quasi-conservative), and probably even death by now.

Old union members have retired or changed careers to non-labor jobs, running their own businesses, etc.

Then you have MoveOn.... angry teenagers (20-something "teenagers") whose only ambition is to avoid growing up. Not unlike the drug-loving kids of '60s, but mercifully less in number and public acceptance.

Oh, I don't know. They could start their own party, or back one of the numerous minor parties.
