Fighting a flood of phony IDs
The Hawkeye ^ | September 30, 2007 | Stephen Franklin

PHOENIX -- Nowadays job seekers at Jason LeVecke's sprawling empire of several dozen fast-food restaurants must show up at company headquarters to get hired.

With large numbers of undocumented workers in Arizona and a new state law considered the nation's stiffest on employers of undocumented immigrants, LeVecke is not taking chances that store managers might mistakenly accept an illegal worker's fraudulent documents.

"How am I supposed to recognize the difference between a legal and an illegal worker? How? It's impossible," he said.

Amid all he has done to prepare for January, when the law takes effect, he is angry about being drawn into the battle over illegal immigration and the fake documents that grease the way for millions to illegally live and work in the United States.

And the battle promises to sprawl as federal and state officials search for more effective ways to nab the millions of users of fake IDs while businesses, worried about the loss of their workers as well as being penalized for hiring them, fight back.

Frustrated by the collapse of the immigration reform drive earlier this year, Congress is trying to pick up parts of the package, including a call for more reliable documents. Meanwhile, the Bush administration is pushing ahead with its own sweeping measures to drive fake documents out of the job market. One of them is Real ID, a driver's license that the administration hopes will stump document forgers.

The U.S. government's basic tool today for ferreting out illegal immigrant workers is called E-Verify, a longtime but little-used voluntary system for employers. Arizona's new law is based on E-Verify, and the federal government will soon direct millions of employers to rely on it. The system allows employers to electronically check workers' Social Security numbers against the government database.

The article is long, but a good read.

I recommend securing those Social Security cards, shredding everything with your name on it, and keeping a tight hold on your wallet or purse.

Why you simply have the feds check the SS# and see if the name and face matches the person claiming it. Also, the feds need to run checks and see if that number is in use else where. My daughter's SS# was used in Idaho while she was working in CA, the feds tried to get her for the taxes that went unpaid in Idaho because the person claimed exemption from taxes. It took a while but she eventually convinced the lamebrains working at IRS she couldn't hold a job in Idaho and CA simultaneously(not at her wages at any rate!).

You know that the IRS had to know it wasn't her but thought they could scare her into paying.

This could easily have been checked during the hiring process and the illegal would have been caught.

This anecdote is PURE BUNK.

There are procedures.

They need to copy the government issued ID, copy the social secuirty card and they are done.

it is not as onerous as they make it out to be.

Does that include illegal immigrants? (Or, people from another country?)

I thought the gov't. only kept track of cattle from birth to death.

Merlin is used by skip tracers, bounty hunters(Dog) and bail bondsmen.

"How am I supposed to recognize the difference between a legal and an illegal worker? How? It's impossible," he (Jason LeVecke) said.

"How"? Uh..let's see.

  1. They're still soaking wet from swimming the Rio Grande.
  2. They have a map issued by the Mexican gubmint with all the trails into the USA shoved in their shirt pocket.
  3. Their ID state they were born in Keokuk Iowa but can't speak one word of English.
  4. The name on their ID is J. Worthington Hoffinger III.
  5. While you're checking their documents, they're humming the Mexican National Anthem.
Just one of those should give you a clue.

Someone please explain to me how Bush’s Read ID is going to work? We have many ids stolen now; so why complicate the situation more.

Oh, wait they need another agency to funnel and launder our money to the powers that be.

I read that the Real ID Act takes effect May of 2008. That would explain the total push for amnesty from the President and Congress that we have seen.

A few weeks ago, I gave someone the exact opposite advise.

He was lamenting how he would like to get a fake ID and start being able to keep some of his money.

He works really hard and makes about $50,000 a year, but at least 75% of that amount goes to current and back child support payments for a whole lot of children.

He also owes lots of money to the IRS and State Government and has bad credit to boot.

I told him he should try, really, really hard to lose his personal information, a lot, especially in hispanic populated areas.

Also advised him to keep a diary of his daily activity in case a more sinister character got hold of his ID.

Well, mark your calendar for November 16. That is when Harry Reid promised to bring the ‘amnesty for the children’ (from the Dream Act) back to the floor.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/09/27/politics/politico/thecrypt/main3306299.shtml

It seems that they are trying to force amnesty down our throats........

This may seem like an overly simplestic way of determining who they really are but why not ask to see their Mexican Birth certificate along with a social security card that reads the very same?

The parties are going to lie about voting anyway. These people will be on the roster whether they are here illegally or not. John Connally talked about the dims buying and stealing votes back when Johnson was running for Senator in his book.
