All of our cars are governed by computer chips now. What will happen if the cars and trucks won’t run?

Within a radius of what from the EMP center? My strong belief is that you'll replace them, buy a new Ipod and get on with your life.

The false assumption here is that you can create a single EMP that is going to electronically slick the world, or even a sizeable portion of the United States.

Yes, they are planning another grand attack to bring about their version of Armageddon, after which they are convinced they will claim the world for Allah, with themselves as rulers.

Where have we heard this before?Sounds like Charlie Manson's interpetation of the White Album mumbo jumbo where he thought him and his followers would survive the race war and rule because the blacks would win but couldn't run things without his help.

It's not a false assumption. Read the link I sent you.

I guarantee that if the cars stop because of tec problems their will be a work around very quickly

What is the value of your "guarantee" when both the problem and the work around are unspecified.

Honestly, as noble as your patriotism is, it reminds me of the Japanese soldiers charging into American machine guns because they were "sure" their warrior spirit would somehow prevail.

It didn't.

You aren't thinking this through. None of those things destroyed a majority of America's infrastructure.

WWII didn't destroy Germany or Japan. It simply set them back.

Frying the electronics of several American cities is not going to put us into the stone age. We aren't as fragile as you think. People (again excluding inner cities) generally rise to the level of what is required of them to survive.

It's not my thinking. Why won't you read the link? It's the Heritage Foundation, not Art Bell.

No one is saying people wouldn't survive, but you seem to be hanging on detail.

Sure the British Empire still "exists," but does that mean the same thing as a century ago?

A blue ribbon commission? Gosh those are always right. Why don't we forgo a government and just get more blue ribbon commissions?

Seriously though, I don't disagree with the commission. But they don't say that a single EMP is going to destroy Western Civilization. They say that it would "impair" or "degrade" our electronics over maybe 1/4 (if very high) to all of the Continental U.S. (if extremely high) depending on the altitude and sophistication of the bomb. This does not equate to frying every electronic device in the USA, let alone the Western World.

I've never said it wouldn't do damage. One EMP just wouldn't do sufficient damage to turn us into Lord of the Flys.

Would practically all transistorized electronics be destroyed? Yes

Across the entire U.S. from one EMP? Where is your data on that?

And if losing two buildings in New York dislocated our economy for a couple of years what would losing just five percent of electronic devices across the country.

You were talking 20 km and ipods before. Now you know that's obviously wrong.

Western civilization will still exist if America gets knocked back a hundred years, but what IS Western civilization if America is too busy getting back on her feet to be a player on the world stage for a few years?

Well when and if it happens go over in a corner some where and suck your thumb and let the grown ups get it all put back together and running again.

I'd wish all you "bootstrappers" well, but invariably you turn very ugly and start looking for someone to blame when it becomes apparent there's no "magic bullet" coming and you didn't know what you spoke of in the first place.

It did? What is your proof of that? I don't see that 9-11, Katrina, Andrew, Hugo, or any other single localized event has been able to knock our economy off course.

You were talking 20 km and ipods before. Now you know that's obviously wrong.

First I said 20 miles for a small yield nuke (no need to exaggerate). It was then changed to a very high altitude detonation. For which I readily agreed that a much larger area would be impaired to some degree. I still think that a prediction of total failure over such an area is hyperbole.

Western civilization will still exist if America gets knocked back a hundred years,

That's a concession of my point, if you care to recheck the thread. Iran cannot end Western Civilization by the direct application of a handful of nukes. I am not saying that means we have nothing to worry about. Far from it. I was pointing out the Iranian hyperbole/delusional-ism.

you didn't know what you spoke of in the first place.

Thats a laugh coming from you.

Do you really believe that IF we were hit like you say that we wouldn't have the ability to strike back?

What about all the subs we have? And you think we are not prepared for this? If they have the ability to do a emp strike on us that will shut us down we will have the mother of all emps to shut them down with and a much greater ability to get back up and running then they do.

Hell you believe we are doomed already.

Am I missing something there? Energy drops to 50% at 20 miles and 25% at 40 miles, but frankly I don't see anything to support your statement that practically all transistorized electronics would be destroyed over a large area of the United States.

Disruption does not equal destruction. The link you provided states that damage would likely NOT BE as bad as previously predicted. Do you have a link that shows that all electronics within "X" number of miles, percentages of electronics by radius? If I'm wrong, I'll be happy to admit it, but all I've seen on these links so far is "degraded" without specificity.
