School cancels 'extreme hugging'

Victoria Sharts likes hugs. In fact, the principal of Julian Middle School in Oak Park said she could have used one herself Monday.

Her announcement last week asking students to refrain from extreme hugging in hallways sparked a media response that caught her off guard, she said. Over the weekend, she had to issue an emergency parent response to dispel rumors of an outright ban on hugging anywhere in the school.

Regardless of what parents have heard or read, the directive to the school's roughly 800 students is to quit clasping one another in the hallways, because group hugs are creating logjams that make it difficult to get to class, she said.

"We appreciate hugs," Sharts said. "We know there are times that hugs are needed and welcomed, but every 40 minutes in the hallway, with large groups of students—then it's not."

The hugging also makes crowd control difficult, she said. There is also a concern by school officials that the hugs can be unwanted or become inappropriate when the embrace goes on a bit too long.

But no, Hugs are horrible.

Students do this on purpose. They do it for attention, and also to jam the halls. I also suspect, but can’t prove, that there are drugs and money changing hands right in the middle.

I hug my brother every time I see him, hard as I can. We only see each other a couple of times a year and life's too short not to. Since we're men, though, we pound each other on the back while doing it.

No hugs. Cut to the chase, take a condom and go all the way.

So what she’s doing is locking down a young man’s chance of any incidental boobal contact until he graduates from high school. What a freaking nazi.

Maybe in your world. Real men are secure enough to give each other big back-slapping hugs. When I see my old friends after a long absence they deserve more than an awkward handshake or some stupid punch on the shoulder.

I was trying to state the same idea, but couldn't come up with the appropriate term. "Boobal" hits the nail, thanks!

My sons all hug me. Let me see... my grandsons hug me. My dad will hug me (he’s 71 now). Hmm.. I have at least two very close friends whom I’ve been in some bad situations with, who hug me. I hug them back. haha. There’s former waiter at a place my wife and I eat regularly will hug me if he sees me (that one’s not comfortable but he’s a nice guy, has a girl friend and he’s young - like 23. So, it’s tolerated.) Ok. That’s the whole list. So... some guys do hug. Nothing wrong with it, depending on the circumstances, eh?

See, I knew I wasn’t the only one. As a 15 year old kid, you grab a hug from a girl with a C-cup or better, and brother, you’re walking funny the rest of the day if you get my drift. That’s just plain fact.

Men are hugging men more, but rules aren’t always clearly defined

The hug, long reserved for women, celebrating sports victories, and men from other countries, is muscling its way into everyday American Guydom.

Stoic machismo still thrives, but at its heels yaps a touchier, Dr. Phil version of virility. Boundaries are eroding. Defenses are being scaled.

The male hug is complicating everything. Men accustomed to the automatic hand clasp accompanied with a brisk up-and-down pump at dinner parties and college reunions, now must preface their greetings or goodbyes with intricate and split-second calculations based on body language, length of friendship and other factors.

Do I shake or do I hug? Making the right choice matters. If one guy goes for the hug, but the other decides upon a handshake, they might collide. An excruciating dance will follow, as the poor lads work feverishly to determine what to do with their hands, their arms, their bodies. (snip)

Last week I signed my son into school late one morning when classes were changing and there were hundreds of kids in the commons area. I asked him “don’t you want to give your dad a hug and kiss goodbye?” He ran from me like the wind.

If only hugs were all they did...!

At this high school, the kids are always hugging, kissing and making out in the hallway. Even some of the TEACHERS allow themselves to be hugged. I must be old fashioned- when I was a kid, you NEVER let others touch you unless you were “going steady”. Frankly, I would check my pockets if one of these tried to hug me...

One boy came into the room one day and went up and down the aisles kissing all the girls. I told him to stop molesting the ladies and take his seat. The GIRLS acted as if I had taken away their lollipops.
