The state Conservative Party has invited Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson to be the featured speaker at its fall bash - a snub to local GOP favorite Rudy Giuliani.
Conservative Mike Long said Giuliani is not his party's favorite son.
"Is Thompson looked at by conservatives as someone they're comfortable with? That's a fair estimation," Long said of the ex-Tennessee senator and actor.
"Thompson has a lion's share of support at the moment among New York Conservatives," Long said. "We're very honored and pleased he will speak."
Just to let you know if you haven’t seen this.
Fred T & his wife will be interviewed on Hannity & Colmes tonight.
In New York third parties have extra power because of cross-filling. You can have a 2nd ballot line.
You could be Republican-Libertarian or Democratic-Liberal.
Since Rudy was on the Liberal Party ballot line in the past, the New York conservative party didnt really want to give Rudy time and its understandable.
It’s understandable based purely on his record and positions, previous affiliations notwithstanding.
It is good to know about the cross filing. I don’t know of another state that does that.
I’m looking forward to FRed and Jenni on H&C tonite, notwithstanding Hannity is a Guiliani-pumper and Colmes thinks the Hildabeast is the reincarnation of Christ.
New York has two significant extra parties: the liberal party, for those who think the Democrats are too conservative, and the conservative party, for those who think the NY Republicans are too liberal.
The Conservative party was founded largely in response to what were called the Rockefeller Republicans, and gained considerable force when they came out in favor of life after Roe v. Wade. Most New York Republicans favor abortion.
The Conservative Party likes to endorse Republican candidates if they can. In the 2000 Senate race against Hillary, they tried to endorse Giuliani, although they had to bend their right-to-life principles to do it, because they feared hillary.
They told Giuliani that they would endorse him with only one condition, that he would not SPEAK ABOUT his policy of favoring partial birth abortion during the campaign. He didn’t have to pledge to oppose it, but only to keep quiet.
He refused. They refused to endorse him. His campaign fell apart, and hillary was elected as Giuliani’s replacement made the serious mistake of hiring some of McCain’s handlers to run his campaign, and they didn’t have a clue what needed to be done to win in NY.
In other words, Giuliani is an abortion extremist, not just your ordinary pro-abort RINO, as that whole sorry business revealed. That is why he MUST NOT BE NOMINATED. Because he is too extreme for any pro-lifer to vote for, because it would destroy the party if he got in.
Munson is correct.
The Conservative Part of NY as well as the Liberal Party and Green Party and Lyndon LaRouche have lines on the ballot. The party can endorse whomever it wants to represent it on its ballot line. The party has in the past endorsed Democrats as well as Republicans. They must be conservative (mostly fiscal conservatives). Same for the Liberal Party and Working Families party.
I tend to vote for a candidate who is a Republican and listed on the conservative line and vote the conservative line to let them know that we expect conservative actions.
Thank you for the historical information. And the conclusions about Guiliani. I tend to ignore things that happen in NY because I live in the Midwest, but it is always good to know there are good people in other places.
What you said is a good illustration of what kind of a candidate Guiliani is.
