There is increasing concern about enrollment decline of African-American male students in higher education and specifically Law Schools. Speaking in Washington, D.C at the Congressional Black Caucus forum last week, Chris Brown, General Motors (GM) Vice President General Counsel for North America, said there is need for diversity in the legal profession both in schools and law firms.
He said diversity is part and parcel of GM policy. “General Motors was the first corporation to have a minority supplies program and a minority dealer program”, he added.
At the same event, which was part of the 37th Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus, U.S. Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones, Chairman of the House Ethics Committee, said this is a significant issue not only in the practice but also as a role model issue.
It was pointed out that many minority students are being admitted to Law Schools unprepared and that race-based admissions have been set to harm minority students by setting them up for failure.
Ms. Pauline A. Schneider of American Bar Association reported that in 1997/8, a total of 9,800 African-Americans were enrolled in Law Schools in the country. Last year, only 9,500 African-Americans were enrolled—a decline of about 300 students. It was stated that a total of 63 per cent of African-American students were denied admission as compared to 35 per cent of their white counterparts.

I interpreted Jigajog’s comment to mean that the only thing he would care about was if his lawyer was effective and efficient, which has nothing to do about the lawyer’s color. I guess it’s all in how you read it.

That’s because, according to John Edwards, most black males are either dead or in prison. Since that’s the “truth” in Edwards’ world, it’s only rationale that they would not be around to attend law school. //sarc

My immediate preparation was almost my undoing. My 21st birthday celebration took place the night before the LSATs, and several friends and I closed down more than a few bars that night. I was surprised I did as well as I did, since I pretty much took a pass on the first hour of the test.
Seriously, though, blacks have been ill-served by affirmative action admissions to top law schools. They tend to cluster in the bottom third of their classes at those schools, and many become disillusioned and lose any incentive to try to excel. Many of these students would do better to attend lesser law schools where they would be more competitive.
The other insidious effect of affirmative action is its tendency to devalue the degrees minority students achieve. I read today that Justice Thomas, in his new book, says that he believes potential employers discounted his law degree from Yale because he was assumed to be the beneficiary of affirmative action.
Why should any black man go to law school when he can dress like a thug, mumble in rhythym to somebody else’s music and be handed a fat recording contract?

My comment was purely a joke.
I work at a new law school, and in the past year I’ve seen perfect examples of what affirmative action leads to. Our first class had approximately six or seven black students. At the end of the first year, four of them had fallen under the academic requirements to remain in school. One of their fathers was on our board of directors, and was a big contributor to the school. Remarkably, she was allowed to stay. Another had attended Yale as an undergraduate, and was one of only two black males. He was allowed to stay as well, but had to repeat his first year. He’s well on his way to failing again.
Recently, the school had a meeting about the formation of our law review. The debate was mainly focused on what criteria would be used to allow students to join. The wiser members of the faculty wanted membership to be based solely on test scores and academic achievement. The nitwit liberal members of our school were upset by this, stating if we based it solely on academic achievement, we’d never get any black students on the review. Academic life is grand.
