Jarrett, who is mired in the worst season of his two-decade career, said he will announce his plans at 6 p.m. Thursday before Nextel Cup qualifying at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. It’s expected he’ll scale back to a part-time schedule. He recently said he was considering several options, including a career in television.

With more free time this season after failing to qualify for 11 of 30 races, Jarrett has been moonlighting as an ESPN analyst on race day.

“The opportunity (to do TV) is there, but I didn’t let that factor into it,” the 50-year-old said. “I’m going to race some next year.”

Jarrett indicated he would remain with Michael Waltrip Racing. He has posted a best finish of 22nd (in the Daytona 500) for the Toyota team, which made its Cup debut this season.
