Exhibition of wartime posters reveals very different Britain, with very different values

Last updated at 01:15am on 4th October 2007

From a patriotic call to eat less bread to proud soldiers extolling the benefits of signing up, these rare wartime posters are some of the finest pieces of propaganda art ever produced. Now they are going on public display for the first time in decades, in an exhibition appropriately named Weapons Of Mass Communication at London's Imperial War Museum.

Empire on the march: A 1939 poster emphasising the common aim

Dig deep for victory: Buying war bonds in 1917 helped the civilians feel they were contributing

Keeping the home fires burning: An iconic Great War image popular in 1915

Below: God save the village green - this 1942 poster left no doubt as to what Great Britain represented, and above putting the kybosh on the Kaiser

Home thoughts: Consumer goods raised morale in 1914

Clockwise from top: This 1915 poster jogged a few consciences; harsh necessity of war by 1917 overtook the patriotic zeal of 1914

Peacetime role: In 1919, the Army offered a secure berth

Seeing this reminds me of the old Disney movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks and the scene on Portabello Road, when the main characters encounter all of the different Commonwealth soldiers.

If anyone can post it or list any modern propaganda posters, that would be great.

I'm sorry, I haven't seen that one but hopefully someone will post it here...it sounds great!

I really haven't seen any 'official' modern war posters that I can recall, at least none that I found memorable.

Certainly our present leadership sucks really hard.

But I really don’t think we are the peoples we were 70 years ago, or we’d throw those leaders out on their ears.

I respectfully disagree.

IMO Corruption among those in power has never before reached such sophisticated heights.

There is such a concentration of wealth that bribing the entire extended family of an elected representative is well with the realm of possibility.

Our leaders literally calculate the cost per vote. The side with the most money, with rarest of exceptions wins.

However, in truth neither much cares as long as the Con continues and nothing threatens the Con.

Hints of this truth can be found among political figures who are ostensibly opposed to each other in public yet are related by marriage.

Ask yourself, could your really live in your home with a committed political activist diametrically opposed to your beliefs?

Not likely.

It would be possible however, if you really believed in nothing..(but money) all your and their public words.. a scam, a game, a con a well contrived performance.

You witness that everyday in the Senate and House. They talk trash to one another before the cameras. Then clap each other on the back when they think the cameras and microphones are away, call in hookers for a party or run off to the nearest embassy for a roaring drunk away from the “prying” eyes of the press (likely a place where the heads of “The Press” also go “for a good time” (off the record of course).

Throw out our leaders?

Lawyers have seized the reigns of power in the Courts, in the Law Enforcement Community, in the Halls of Congress..

Now increasingly in the Armed Forces.

They are, “The unseen hand”, robbing, pillaging America and the West.. They facilitate Political and Corporate acts for which a common citizen would find themselves quickly in prison.

A majority of the American people are trapped in bone crushing debt.

Not just the Poor but the Middle and Upper Middle Class, it is only a question of scale.

They are enslaved in Chains of Iron, Bronze and Silver Plate but chains none the less.

Of their own making you say?

Was it honest working people who turned the inner cities into war zones.. Who open and maintain the crack houses and prostitution rackets?

So when they incur extreme debt to keep their children and families as far away from that wickedness they should be condemned?

Homes costing 3 times an average workers wages in the 60’s now cost 8 times the average workers wages today.

That is the average working man or womens doing right?

At a typical fixed rate of interest. Currently for every $1000 a man pays on “his home” $900 goes to interest. barely $100 dollars applied towards the principle of a $250,000 home a home. (Don’t forget taxes and insurance lol). A home which will cost him $750,000 if he manages to pay it of in what 30 years?

Meanwhile, some Corporate A$$Hat spends 2 Million dollars on his wifes Birthday Party (in corporate money of course not from his own millions).

Live in the inner city, have your daughters raped or turned out, your sons murdering each other. Drugs on the streets so deadly that just one use and bang! Your child is sentenced to a short brutal and ugly life of addiction,.

Yet an “epidemic” of Meth use at Rutgers or Yale would see the FBI Hostage Rescue Team... full regalia out in force to find the criminals responsible). The inner city...well, “their animals anyway” right?

Live in the Suburbs and have your daughters told by public school teachers who trade the vulnerable among them like playing cards that “Sex without commitment is beautiful” “Liberating”. Not debasing, dehumanizing, degrading. Teachers “Mandatory reporters” of suspected Child Abuse...

Your sons told their fathers are ignorant and or stupid and to have pride in ones forefathers if dead white guys is racist.

Racism being the exclusive and proper Provence of the “oppressed” the minority.

Our “Leaders” the Wealthy and Powerful speak of “Liberation” and “Equality” yet carefully exchange daughters and sons in alliances little different than the Kings and Nobles of Middle Age Europe.

The Elite University where money talks and knowledge walks is the mechanism of choice in separating their children from the “rif raff” and obtaining a “First Class Education” lol.

Those in Power, those with Money hold you me, our children our loved ones in contempt.

They are not from US

They are not for US

That is why they Hate US

There is no need to knock your own kind...

The elite does it for us every day...

at no extra charge.

W

I do not disagree with much of what you say. Although you’re a little too conspiracy theory for me.

Housing prices, for instance. While they have increased, much of the increased value has gone to those who already owned property, not to the banks.

The US still has lower real estate prices than most of the developed world. It’s cheaper to buy a four-bedroom house on half an acrre here that in Europe or developed Asian countries.

And I still say that if we allow ourselves to be abused this way, we have nobody to blame but ourselves. That’s what the right of revolution is for: When nogoodniks grab the reins of power and won’t give them up, the people have the right to cut those reins and head off in a different direction entirely. But I don’t think we’re to that point yet.

I’ve visited Duxford and the War Rooms. Still kick myself for not visiting the main museum but it takes at least two weeks just to see most of the good stuff in London, and I only had two days!

I sincerely hope that you'll be able to visit again and spend more time.  You'll surely be glad that you did  :-)

Let’s get this straight, please, guys:

MANY OF THESE POSTERS ARE FROM WW *ONE*, NOT WWII.

WWII isn’t the only war that ever happened!

Besides, it’s more interesting with WWI - there wasn’t any clear threat nor real “monster” to worry about such as Hitler, yet the Brits still didn’t make any equivocations about what was “right”.

Sally Field and Cindy Sheehan are going to have a heart attack!

We can all be truly thankful that the Ladies of America as well as Great Britain and our other essential Coalition Partners are mainly sane, unlike the two that you cite.

The West would be much like Cuba, if the 'vision; of those two were to be put into practice.

The fact that either of them are allowed near a microphone and are taken seriously by a few is an indication of the tremendous superiority and freedom of our culture over the sort that they would saddle us with, but at the same time a reminder that freedom is never free, and the maintenance of it requires eternal vigilance, oftentimes in opposition to forces of evil within our own country.
