The New Mexico League of United Latin American Citizens is calling for a federal investigation of the student who ripped down a Mexican flag at the University of New Mexico last month. "We are hoping that the FBI would open up an investigation, not really for what he did to the flag but really it goes deeper," said John Moya, president of one of LULAC's Albuquerque councils.
LULAC bills itself as the largest Latino civil rights organization in the country. Moya said his organization is concerned about a July posting on the Internet by a "Peter Lynch" that refers to Mexicans as wetbacks and talks about driving through a group of them. "That really is really scary to us, and I think it should be investigated," Moya said.
Lynch has said he doesn't believe he made the statement and didn't share its sentiments. He has said that those accusing him of a hate crime "are trying to make themselves out to be the victims, when in fact the American flag was the victim."
Responding to LULAC's request for an FBI investigation, Lynch said it would be redundant.
An FBI spokesman didn't return a call from the Journal seeking comment.
Lynch said the FBI has already investigated him and OK'd a top-secret security clearance for him because of his military background. "It's a waste of taxpayer dollars, but OK," Lynch said. "They don't grant top-secret security clearances to just anybody, and I hold one currently."

Just so we are clear, Eastbound, I didn’t say the Southwest was “stolen,” I was saying the Mexicans think so — as justification for their squatting. They think Gen./President Santa Ana, who was involved in those matters (and who pocketed some of the money transacted in the treaty personally, allegedly) concluded an abrogatable treaty.
Yes, I’m clear on that, bajabaja. My remarks were meant for the Mexicans who are using that as an excuse.
