President Bush met with his economic team today in the Oval Office. August 2007 marked the 49th consecutive month of job growth since 2003. “And that's the longest uninterrupted job growth on record for our country.” (Transcript)
The president also took this opportunity to speak about terrorism and to defend US interrogation policy since some people, like Senator Jay Rockefeller (Democrat-W.Va.) and the good folks at the New York Times, apparently have nothing better to do than worry about terrorists’ rights. (Source)
By the way, according to a recent FOX News poll, “1 in 5 Democrats thinks the world will be better off if America loses the war in Iraq”. Not that we question their patriotism or anything.
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates arrived in Peru today and met with leaders and military officials.
And the new Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen and General David Petraeus met with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Iraq.

President Bush: I know that people are concerned whether or not they're going to have enough money to meet their needs. And so my call to the United States Congress is, keep taxes low. If you want this economy continue to grow, and if you want to reinforce the fact that we've got -- entrepreneurship is strong and people are working, don't raise taxes.

In other words, we got professionals who are trained in this kind of work to get information that will protect the American people. And by the way, we have gotten information from these high-value detainees that have helped protect you.And finally, the techniques that we use have been fully disclosed to appropriate members of the United States Congress [Democrats]. The American people expect their government to take action to protect them from further attack. And that's exactly what this government is doing, and that's exactly what we'll continue to do.

Q Dana, why did the President feel the need today to weigh in on the subject of the CIA interrogation program in what was ostensibly to be a statement on the economy? Did he feel that the disclosures about the harsh treatment of detainees were somehow casting the administration in a bad light?…Dana Perino: I think the President today wanted to make sure that, given that there is so much interest, going on two days, that he had an opportunity when he -- when he saw members of the press, that he take that opportunity to remind everybody of -- we are in a war.
One of the things he's really concerned about is that every day that we get farther away from 9/11, that people will start forgetting the threats that we're under, and al Qaeda is very serious, they're very patient. And the best source of information about how they're trying to harm us is from the terrorists themselves. And that's why we created the interrogation program, and it has saved lives.
