Filipino children hospitalised after eating Chinese candy

AFP - Friday, October 5MANILA, Oct 5, 2007 (AFP) - Twenty-three children in the Philippines were hospitalised after eating sweets made in China, officials said Friday.

The pupils, aged nine and 10, were rushed to hospital on Thursday suffering from stomache aches, vomiting and dizziness after eating candy given out at a birthday party on Bantayan Island near Cebu.

Romelo Mates, an adviser at an elementary school in the town of Madridejos, said that according to its wrapper, the Ube Milk Candy was made in Guandong, China.

Mates told local media the children were kept in overnight for observation and four were given intravenous liquid after showing signs of weakness.

The Cebu provincial government is now examining the sweets.

Last month, the Philippines education department banned four Chinese food products from school canteens following reports they contained cancer-causing formaldehyde.

China has been battling to improve the reputation of its products amid fears over food safety.

Industrial oils, acid, cancer-causing chemicals and other dangerous ingredients have been found in thousands of food items such as baby milk powder, rice and flour.

In July, Beijing executed the former head of its food and drug safety watchdog for corruption as part of drastic steps to contain the problem.

Maybe Philippines have to apologize China for isolently pointing a finger at "Great Zhonghua." Great China does not make such mistakes./sarc

Made-in-China products pose a dilemma. If you do not import them, China cries protectionism and threatens retaliation. If you import them and found them hazardous to your health, you are not supposed to publicize it or you risk trade/financial retaliation from China.

The only way out is to keep eating them and dying for the sake of world peace and maintaining global trade order.:-)

I think inflation and market capitalism in combination with zero safeguards and regulations is leading to the slew of bad chinese products.

If people stopped buying anything from China, it would shut them down. I mean anything.

I believe that is a suggestion to be posted on move-on.org and code pink websites. I am sure they will be more than willing to oblige for world peace and trade order.

I looked at some very nice salmon filets today while grocery shopping. Pkg was labeled “wild caught,” but in small print, “made in China.” I wouldn’t feed it to my cat...
