Phoenix cops call for end to immigration policy in city

PHOENIX — A union for police officers broke with leaders of the Phoenix Police Department on Monday in calling for an end to an immigration policy that the union says makes streets in the nation’s fifth largest city more dangerous.

The policy prevents police officers from asking federal immigration authorities for assistance in situations where illegal immigrants commit civil traffic violations.

Harris is a police chief which means that he is a political whore, and will do whatever his master, the mayor or equivalent, tells him to do.

Pinging a valley person to answer Jeff's question? (I'm further south, Jeff, and I'd say we don't officially meet...unofficially, yes!)

"Harris said the policy centers on immigrants who haven’t committed a crime and are suspected only of entering the country illegally."

Ahhhhh, excuse me did Harris say "centers on immigrants"? If they're immigrants, they are legal.

So you think a cop should be reprimanded for questioning the citizenship of an illegal?

About two years ago I was cruising around on real estate sites looking at the possibilty of buying a second home in AZ, NM, or elsewhere in the Southwest.

These were real estate sites and forums, not political forums like FR, but I was surprised at the huge number of extremely negative comments *by current residents* about the illegal alien problem and how it had effected their communities: lots of expressions about increased crime, trash, drunk driving, etc. And a general sense of less security and even being under seige in some cases.

Obviously I’ve stopped looking for a place in the Southwest. Even St. George Utah seemed to have problems!

and there’s no way to arrest 300,000 people for being illegal and no place to put them if there was

Prior to the 1990's, it was routine in both Phoenix and Tucson.

The joke was you could tell who the illegals were because they were the only people actually doing the speed limit.

It was not uncommon to see a car pulled over by the local cops and a green Border Patrol van right behind it - they would call them if they guy didn't speak English, couldn't produce any state or federal ID. And prior to the 80's, legal permanent residents were almost zero in Arizona.

What you just repeated about an island subculture is La Raza talking points propaganda designed to defeat immigration enforcement by disempowering the local police. They first tried that act in Los Angeles in the 70's, and it worked for them. The same immigration enforcement by local police used to be routine there, too, but with that babble speak line they got Special Order 40 implemented.

The police union in Phoenix is simply repeating the same drivel, probably at the urging of La Raza sympathizers and activists in their ranks who were hired under "Affirmative Action" mandates (hire a Conquistador! Pizarro was an oppressed minority!)

When it's too hot to live somewhere because the next traffic stop could mean deportation, you move. For a while people will tough it out and see if they can stay under the radar. But eventually the reality of that will cause the intended attrition.

They ( La Raza / LULAC / MALDEF ) know that and intend to defeat it.

And only defeatists buy that line.

Los Angeles is a sanctuary city. Special Order 40 prevents police from even mentioning or asking about immigration status. This policy helps make Los Angeles illegal alien heaven, and the little jerk Mexican mayor Villaraigosa revels in it.

The police chief (Bratton) has done nothing but suck up to the sanctuary city policy. He's useless.

I didn't catch this until I read it again in your post. He contradicts himself within the same sentence. Orwellian.

Doesn't federal law trump municipal policy?

Under section 642(a) of IIRIRA, a “Federal, State, or local government entity or official may not prohibit, or in any way restrict, any government entity or official from sending to, or receiving from, the Immigration and Naturalization Service information regarding the citizenship or immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of any individual.”

Not to mention a president who'd insist on it.

Phoenix changed so much in the 19 years I lived there. Maybe the draconian laws penalizing employers who hire illegals will make a difference. I really hope so! This policy is so stupid... the mayor Phil Gordon is a lightweight in the mold of Terry Goddard.
