Why Fred Thompson Has A Chance
American Chronicle ^ | 10-9-07 | Ken Hughes

You will recall in 2000 George Bush was depicted by the media and the Gore supporters as some kind of Hill-Billy from the sand dunes of West Texas, and look where it got him. All those Hill-Billy’s from the real hard working America turned out to vote for him. There’s an old saying among country folks, ”You can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy” In spite of Yale and Harvard George still had a little of that brown stuff on his boots when he arrived in Washington. Hillary, Obama, Giuliani and McCain don’t get it, there’s such a thing as being to clever when dealing with the average American. It’s not that the public doesn’t get it it’s they can’t see anything to get. Most of what they’re being spoon fed by the campaigners they’ve heard a dozen or more times before. They may have bought it once they’re not buying it this time around.

There are dozens of platitudes to describe Fred Thompson. Simply put he’s a country boy who learned how to play with the big boys in their sand box. Fred Thompson first came to the publics attention as the Senate Attorney who shut John Dean up in the Watergate Hearings. He’s since made a name for himself around Washington as a man of intellect and trust. The public knows him as an actor, a distinction that’s often used to discredit politicians. Let me remind you’ll when a presidential candidate looks for money and media attention the first bus stop is Hollywood, actually they’re all actors some just better than others.

Jeri Thompson is about half country herself, she comes from Naperville, Illinois, that’s not shanty town but it’s a ways down the road from affluent Park Ridge where Hillary comes from. Mrs. Thompson isn’t that well known but I venture to guess we aren’t going to find any embezzlers or drug dealers in either Jeri of Fred’s family, [perhaps a Moonshiner or two but that’s permissible in the South.] Fred Thompson may not be setting the Washingtonians on the edge of their chairs but you can bet he’s catching on across America with the people who elect presidents. As long as his bus has gas and the wheels don’t come off, by his plodding one town at a time crossing America Fred will get his message out and the public will know by looking him in the eye and not through a television or computer screen they can understand what you see is what to expect.

This may be one of the more critical elections in years. America is at a cross roads between a socialist oriented society and containing down the road of capitalism and free enterprise. Under a socialist system the government takes most of what you have and gives back a little. Under the capitalist system you give the government a small portion of what you have and keep the rest,

Fred Thompson understands this. Most of the countries who embraced communism and socialism in the 20th century have since rejected it, most of its functions have become archaic in this globalize economy and they are on the road to accepting the capitalist system of government. By their very nature governments are not profit centers and without profits growth is impossible. Individual incentive created this great nation. It’s beyond comprehension why any politicians would want to change a system that’s been so successful for over 200 years and provided such a wonderful lifestyle.

These days the public is more aware how political rip-offs influence their lives more than during previous national elections. The publics had the opportunity to see congress spend money like it was water flowing over Niagara Falls. Talk Radio Hosts, Conservative Cable TV pundits and Internet Bloggers are spreading the word, this country belongs to “WE the People” not the politicians, it’s our money their spending not theirs. Fred Thompson has an opportunity to sell conservatism back to the public, the voters are demanding accountability. What the mainstream media is peddling isn’t what the public wants and as we come closer to the elections will demand more than empty rhetoric.

If Fred Thompson ignores traditional campaigning and goes directly to the public his message will be heard and understood. He may not still have the old Red Pick-up truck let’s hope he still has what stood in the back campaigning for what won him a seat in congress.

Congress is out of control, this country needs a man of the people to represent the people. Washingtonians aren’t cutting it their stealing it.

Thompson did not say he needed to get Nancy and Harry's permission before striking Iran's nukes.

Here's what was said, from the official transcript. I'm including McCain's prior comments because Thompson kicked off his response by saying that McCain had it right in this situation:

Matthews: ...that raises the question, if you were president of the United States, would you need to go to Congress to get authorization to take military action against Iran's nuclear facilities?

McCain: We're dealing, of course, with hypotheticals. If the situation is that it requires immediate action to ensure the security of the United States of America, that's what you take your oath to do, when you're inaugurated as president of the United States.

If it's a long series of build-ups, where the threat becomes greater and greater, of course you want to go to Congress; of course you want to get approval, if this is an imminent threat to the security of the United States of America.

So it obviously depends on the scenario.

But I would, at minimum -- I would, at minimum, consult with the leaders of Congress because there may come a time when you need the approval of Congress. And I believe that this is a possibility that is, maybe, closer to reality than we are discussing tonight.

Mr. Matthews: Senator Thompson?

Mr. Thompson: On this question? Yes, I think John has it right.

I would add that under the War Powers Act, there's always a conflict between the Congress and the president as to the exact applicability of that when an engagement lasts for a particular period of time and when they must come before Congress.

I don't think anybody running for president should diminish the power of the office before he gets there and take side in a hypothetical dispute. But I would say that in any close call, you should go to Congress, whether it's legally required or not. Because you're going to need the American people and Congress will help you if they're voting for it or if they support it, or leaders, especially in the opposite party, are convinced and looking at the evidence that this is the right thing to do, that will help you with the American people.

Mr. Thompson: And we have learned that, over the long term in any conflict, we've got to have the strong support of the American people over a protracted period of time.

If you guys haven’t seen it, you HAVE to read the ‘live blogging’ of the debate on Fred’s blog!!! It’s awesome. The formatting is a bit odd, so I don’t know how well it would post here, but people should read it. It rips Rudy and Romney’s records to shreds. http://fredfile.fred08.com

That is great. Gee, for someone who's lazy, doesn't really want it, and whose campaign is in complete turmoil, his people seem to be quick and on the ball.

More than a few people do. National Review’s Kathryn Jean Lopez, for example: “And the Winner Is...Fred Thompson.”

One point of disagreement: McCain did faulter and repeat himself at a crucial point in an important answer. His mind is not as sharp as it needs to be in order to function at the level of President.

how Sissy Chrissy tried to "do Fred in" by asking him: "Who is the Prime Minister of Canada?"

Yeah, Fred answered correctly but that's the type of tactic that should get Chrissy kneed in the nuts at the next cocktail party.

“Jeri Thompson is about half country herself, she comes from Naperville, Illinois, that’s not shanty town but it’s a ways down the road from affluent Park Ridge where Hillary comes from.”

Geez, whoever wrote this doesn’t know Illinois and specifically doesn’t know Naperville. I live two towns over from Naperville. It is a huge town, I believe it is now third or fourth largest in size in Illinois population-wise. I lived in Naperville for a while in one of my previous incarnations. What a charming place to be. It has the double pleasure of being a quaint historical town founded in the mid-1830’s along the DuPage River in rich fertile soil (Illinois has the most beautiful black earth, but I digress), with lovely trees and a wonderful location (about 35 miles west of Chicago). Along what is known as the highway I-88 corridor, one high tech business after another has sprung up. The town grew by leaps and bounds, and is chock full of wealthy entrepreneurs as well as lots of middle class families, and tons of kids. The school system is excellent, the tax base great (an artsy craftsy downtown area with lots of little shops and many restaurants), and a beautiful riverwalk. In comparison, Park Ridge is a well healed but rather bland and gray town with 1/2 the charm of Naperville. But to make Jeri out as being some kind of hick from the sticks is a baldface lie of the first order. Anyone who wants to check out Naperville, go to its website and see for yourself:

MONEY Magazine: Best places to live 2006: Naperville, IL

WINNER
Naperville, IL
Top 100 rank: 2
Population: 141,600

Go to this link and see for yourself what Naperville is all about:

“Overview

Each year, millions of people visit Naperville to enjoy our unique blend of big-city amenities and small-town charm. Naperville’s quaint downtown offers an array of shopping, dining and cultural activities to fit every budget. From well-known retail stores to unique boutiques, Naperville’s eclectic mix of shops beckons even the most hesitant shopper.

World-class parks and unique cultural opportunities make Naperville the destination of choice for both residents and visitors. On a nice day, thousands of people come into town to stroll along the picturesque Riverwalk, frolic at Centennial Beach or enjoy a free outdoor concert.

Naperville also offers a number of year-round attractions including museums, theaters, public art and performance groups. Don’t forget to check out the many community events around town during the year. Use the Quick Links to the right to explore more of what Naperville has to offer.”

" He also needs to get out of Senate debate mode and act Presidential. I didn’t like his answer that he would need Nancy and Harry’s approval to bomb Iran’s nuke facilities. The Senate is a debating society but a President must act from a position of power. "
Hopefully, IRAN will be dealt with before Fred Thompson becomes our next president.
Fred we love ya, but please ? in a speech or in public ? try not to pick your nose 10 times in 30 mins.

Just the fact that 99% of the MSM’s attention tonight is on “How did Fred do? .. after Democrats/Other Republican Candidates and MSM constant attacks on Fred for weeks and months " shows he has more than a “chance” in this fight.

There now, fixed.

Maybe the Naperville vs. Park Ridge reference is for when both women were being raised (can’t use “growing up” for Hillary), so you’re talking 30-50 years ago.
