TRENTON, NJ (AP) -- New Jersey's accelerating population loss is starting to have significant economic and fiscal consequences for the state

The report found the state lost 231,565 people between 2002 and 2006, including 72,547 people last year. The latter was the fourth highest loss in the nation behind only California, Louisiana and New York.
Meanwhile, North Carolina grew by 807,000 people over the four-year period, displacing New Jersey last year as the nation's 10th most populous state, the report stated.
When lost income and sales taxes from the people who left New Jersey are considered, the population drain is estimated to have cost the state $680 million in tax revenue last year, the report found.

From 2000 to 2005, the largest net outflow of New Jersey taxpayers was to Florida (124,584 people), Pennsylvania (42,459 people) and North Carolina (29,803 people), their report found.
It found the state had a positive net inflow of taxpayers from New York (148,538 people).

I thought Bucks would be more expensive. My taxes are dirt cheap.
That is where I live.
The worst counties to live in eastern PA are Montgomery, Delaware, and Philadelphia (duh) counties. Bucks is still more reasonable than those counties, to say nothing of Central NJ.
Monroe County, of course, is a dumping ground for ghetto dwellers suckered in by no-money-down cheap housing advertised on the NY subway system.
Don’t know about that. All of the waterfront property in our area (eastern NC) has been bought by people from New Jersey. Of course, now they want to turn NC into New Jersey.
Awwww, just follow Michigan’s shining example and raise taxes. It’ll all work out fine.

I thought it was funny that you had to pay a toll to get out of NJ, but it was free to come in. Having said that I thought NJ was a great and beautiful place to live. Too bad it is so expensive. I loved all the little towns, the people were always friendly and there was always something interesting to see and do. Of course we lived in a Republican county.
Funny - elsewhere in the article it states that the exodus might be slowed by the drop in property values. Might be too late to get out while the "getting is good"
Really? Is there a disproportionately high number of older people in the state? I would have assumed it's similar to the other states.
First, the entire country is ageing and more and more baby boomers will be retiring. By 2030, there will be twice as many retirees [70 million] as there are today.
Second, retirees are heading to places with lower taxes and better weather. They are free from the shackles of having to live where their job is.
There is a difference within the US among states on the median age of the population. Maine is the oldest and Utah the youngest. NJ is the 15th oldest. Median Age of the Total Population: 2003
People who retire in New Jersey can’t afford to stay in their homes, even if they’ve paid off their mortgages, because the property taxes are so high. So, they leave. Young people can’t find jobs because the tax base is so high employers are moving away. So, what’s left? Lucky people who land the remaining jobs, losers on welfare, illegal immigrants and thick larding of criminals and corruption eating away at everything they can get their hands on.
Maybe people are leaving the blue states for the red ones, but that doesn’t mean those people will vote red rather than blue. Just look at what is happening with the Massghanistanition of New Hampshire.

Last one out of the Democratic Peoples Republic of New Jersey please don’t forget to turn the lights out.
Consider this fair warning as if you already didn’t know. Don’t trust New Englanders, Kalifornians, or jackasses who move into your state from NY or NJ.
They get over the Berlin Wall to escape high taxes, collectivism and Socialism. But they are carriers of the disease.
Then they will sit around and wonder and bitch about how the state they moved to turned into the same Socialist sinkhole they tried to get away from.

I saw the same thing happen back when I lived in suburban Philadelphia. All the leftist human waste from the city decided it couldn't put up with the cesspool that Philadelphia had become. So they all moved out to the suburbs. Chester County (where I lived) is pretty much lost to the Democrat party now. Taxes are going up, government is getting bigger. Each time I visit... I just don't think I could live there again.
Thereby perpetuating the problem.
Worst case scenario is 3.5 years away.
