GOP dying; a Clinton victory would shock it back to health
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 10/10/07 | Steven Greenhut

New York U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton is one of the most loathsome modern American politicians, given her barely disguised support for massive government programs, her grating schoolmarm personality and her aggressive political behavior, yet I'm left hoping that she obliterates any of the front-running Republican candidates and has long-enough coattails to expand Democratic control of the Senate and House of Representatives.

Unless Republican candidate Ron Paul —- the only supporter of liberty in the bunch of GOP ne'er do wells —- somehow propels his impressive Internet campaign into an improbable electoral victory, there is nothing else, but a Clinton victory, that will save the Republican Party and help rebuild the nation's long-suffering freedom movement.

How can an enemy of freedom help freedom?

Well, when you've got a headache, you take an aspirin. When you've got the flu, you take something a little stronger. When you've got cancer, you need chemotherapy, which kills cancer cells but can come perilously close to killing the patient. It's a sad truth, but the Republican Party has the political equivalent of cancer.

[snip]

A Guiliani victory--indeed, a victory by any of the top GOP candidates--would cement the party's totalitarian tendencies. Even the party's social conservative wing, its most powerful grass-roots force, is ready to bolt if Giuliani gets the nomination.

Religious Right notables such as Focus on the Family's James Dobson and former presidential candidate Gary Bauer met recently in Salt Lake City to discuss backing a third-party candidate. These folks are no friends of liberty, either. Still, their defection could assure that increasingly likely Clinton victory.

This guy is a columnist for the Orange County Register, so I figured his work might be on the list of stuff we cannot repost in full. He is also a lunatic California libertarian, as best I can tell. Still, I wonder if he is right about the possible effect of a Clinton victory.

Seems to me more likely that a Clinton victory would mean the end of the GOP coalition that has kept people like him, people like James Dobson (and me), and people like Rudy Giuliani in the same political boat. That might ultimately be a good thing for America.

Will a Hillary victory be good for our troops in the middle of a multi-front war? No.

Therefore, I'll support the Republican candidate. It might not preserve every one of my conservative ideals, but it will save lives of those more important than I.

Reads like a nutjob to me. Doesn’t sound too smart in a time of war.

I don’t see how the end of the coalition could possibly be a good thing for America, given the alternative.

Also, the author is quite incorrect about the social conservatives bolting. Gary Bauer was on Michael Medved’s prgram yesterday saying that the third party idea is terrible and would cost SCOTUS for a generation. He wants to keep the coalition together and negotiate the best deal possible.

Hopefully the imminent threat of Hillary as we get closer to '08 will shock it back to its senses.

Anyone that looks to Ron Paul for political salvation is a fool.

There is something to be said about the 2 party system being one of swings. It seems it never fails (since FDR anyway) that as soon as one party gets close to “putting the other out of business” suddenly it swings back.

It was only 3 years ago (or so) that articles were printed talking about the Democrats being a permanent minority. That is a sign that the end is near for the run...a lot like the stock market.

True, but the analogy still fails.

The Republican Party doesn't have "cancer", it has Herpes - the inevitable result of getting into bed with Democrats and their very unsavory ideas. Hillary Clinton is more akin to a bad dose of the Clap.

Agreed. The Hillary victory that will bring Republicans back, is her inevitable victory in the democrat primary.

What this writer is saying is is also what James Dobson is saying.

However, this philosophy is perverse. Hitlery would get people killed...aborted babies, soldiers in battle, very likely an increase in terror attacks.

This is ugly thinking. I hope the millions whom Dobson influences don't listen to him on this.

I'm in the same boat with you. I don't care who the Republican nominee is at this point, but he's got my vote in the general election.

I think a lot of Republicans don't realize that the chances of Mrs. Bill Clinton becoming the next president are about 99.9999999999996%. We may squabble during the primary season, but whoever ultimately emerges as the nominee must get all the support we can give. We've already seen the dreadful things that have come out of the ultra-liberal Congress. We certainly don't need that and Mrs. Bill Clinton running things again.

True, it may shock the GOP back to it's senses, but if Dobson et. al. have their way, we won't have a UNITED GOP front to oppose her. Hence, a Clinton presidency, leading to a Clinton dictatorship and the abolishment of the Constitution and all freedoms we now have. And no, I don't think I'm being too extreme on this.

The old "you-win-by-losing" strategery, eh? There is no more stupid political philosophy out there. You don't effect change by losing. You don't get to implement an agenda by losing. Politics is about winning, getting as many people elected as you can who come the closest to lining up with your beliefs and principles. It isn't about handing elections to your opponents. Winners get to run things, losers stay on the sidelines and get nothing done.

Of course, where the wheels fall off of this broken-down cart of a philosophy is that when you let someone like Hillary! win, you very well may not have a country left within which you can achieve your comeback after losing. What good is it to throw away your chance at winning the pending election for a chance to win the one after that if you aren't around to fight the next battle?

Too late. A Clinton victory would mean the rapid end of America.

At this point it might just be a matter of if it dies a slow death by RINOism or a quick one by outright Marxism. Either way, if we're still alive to look them in the eye, we will have to answer to our children and grandchildren as to why, when we had a chance to save the country we let it go down the tubes.

This brought to you by a man named “Greenhut.” That seems strangely appropriate...

And excuse me while I recall a day when the 2006 elections were going to teach us a lesson and unite us around a cause...
