SAN FRANCISCO - A federal judge has blocked a proposed rule requiring employers to fire workers whose names don't match their Social Security numbers, dealing a major blow to the Bush administration's crackdown on illegal immigration.
Under the rule, businesses with employees whose names and Social Security numbers didn't match would have three months to correct the mistakes or fire the employees. If not, they could face government prosecution.

Gee....wasn’t that the plan all along?
-serious now-
Man, I am getting sick of these liberals. If there was one thing you would think could be nonpartisan it would be stopping the invasion of illegal aliens.
Black robed cockroaches.
Yeah, me too. A Clinton appointee to boot!
The invasion is a big part of their voting bloc.
The laws regarding this are already on the books, and have been for a number of years.
Look at Form I-9, which is required at hiring. Booklet that explains that form clearly states the fines for being careless and hiring someone who cannot work.
DOES THIS MEAN I CAN DROP OUT OF SOCIAL SECURITY PONZI SCHEME? NO it only helps ILLEGAL Aliens.
Hmmm.... I wonder how the 9th district got THIS. Has the 9th district won a Supreme Court contest since Roberts?
He’s Justice Breyer’s brother
Time to strip all federal courts outside of the Supreme Court of their authority.
I was wondering about that. Sigh.
Another day, a bit more of our country frittered away.
Utter bushwa.
I changed the name on my SS card from my maiden name to my married name after working for years (after I was married) under my maiden name.
I'm quite sure that the time required to do this was nowhere 90 days.
Of course, I am a legal U. S. citizen, so there were no obstacles.
There is no common ground with socialists (we have to stop calling them liberals) The only thing that matters to them is first gaining power then, making the country weak and irrelevant and a welfare state with mandatory government skools.
Actually, there IS nonpartisan agreement about NOT stopping invasion of illegal aliens.
Okay, stop. No one is going to strip Federal courts of authority. This was an administration initiative to try to enforce the law and it is getting legally obstructed.
If Chertoff is right and the obstacles are only modest, then the program should be underway soon. The real danger is that if FR hardliners let a Democrat win the presidency, then this program will get stopped and illegal immigration will become far, far worse.
For now, however, the question is . . . what can be done? It does indeed look like enforcing current laws, a mantra used during the immigration debate, will indeed not work because the other side will obstruct it. So what can be done? In a proper, legal way, what can be done?
They like to call themselves “undocumented immigrant” and when combined with the phrase “innocent until proven guilty”, how do you get them out?
