***I turn 60 later this month and applied for Social Security last month because Im a widow. My first check arrives next month and much to my surprise, its a lot more than I thought Id be getting.***
No wonder my checks have been short!
We did not reap anywhere near the job opportunities and easy money that those born early did. We are more hardscrabble.
Wa-ha-ha-ha-ha or LOL if you perfer.
The 1950s and 1960s were TOUGH! The best opertunity one had here was to join the military and get out from here!
Kathleen’s high school picture was in the newspaper a couple of years ago, I guess when she turned sixty. When I saw it, I said to my husband, doesn’t this picture of the first baby boomer look like someone you could have known? He said, no. Then I looked at the name under the picture and realized that I did know her.
I love these threads that mention "boomers", because I just know that the X-ers will never disappoint us in their ragging - and as usual, they're in before post number 10.
Personally, I'm going on the teat at age 62....and will start a thread to bleat about it!
I don't know how close you are but you're gonna enjoy being retired.....I can tell. Good for you.
I've been retired for 8 years and absolutely love it.
All those blessings and look at the cr@ppy world your generation leaves in its wake.
I can’t blame the Boomers entirely. A lot of the BS that found root in the boomer mind was germinated in the so called “Greatest Generation.” But the Boomers are responsible for institutionalizing the worst excesses of modern liberalism.
Nothing.
The whole point of “BABY BOOM” was supposed to be that men coming back from “the war” (WWII) were massively impregnating their (wives) at a high rate, hence the “boom” in a short couple years after.
How it makes sense that a person spawned 18 years after the war is part of this “boom” I don’t know.
My reply #63 in agreement with yours.

I’ve always looked at the potential payout from social security as “drinkin’ money.” I dont count it in my planning, and I dont expect it to be there when I am eligible.
If it is there, I will be happy and spend it with reckless abandon. If its not, I wont miss it.
The article states she is the first Boomer. Not the first Boomer to apply for or receive Social Security benefits.
Good shot! Thanks
Excellent Post (Dittos)- My sentiments exactly.
A proud baby boomer myself and no I was never a hippie. Could not stand them then nor now........Thank you for your post, I could not have said it any better.
As long as there is paper, the Government will be able to continue to send all all Social Security benefit checks.

Yeah, we’re such a$$holes.
You might want to think some about the inheritances some of us will be leaving behind. Pretty impressive.
That’s one of the things I’ve been telling folks who want to open ROTH IRAs, which are not tax deductable.
At least you’ve had a tax deduction with a 401k or a regular IRA.
The big screw over is on it’s way.
What drugs are you on?
Hey, stuff the nasty comments. I speak from my own experience. People 10 - 15 years older than me were hired off the street, with no degree, and became professionals then eventually management. No matter how incompetent, they advanced and gained power. Look I’m not bitching, I am just telling it like it is. Mind you, I speak of the world of high tech. Certainly, in the world of more traditional blue collar manufacturing, or other business areas, this may not be the case. I digress. The truth is, if you got into your career in 1970, then you had to be a complete idiot to not own your own home and have some serious dinero by the time you were 25. That is certainly not true for the majority of those who came out of school in the mid 80s. Go ahead and deny it, these are the facts, Jack.
If you started work in the 50s, then you are probably not a Boomer. If you started in the 60s, then unless it was the late 60s (or mid 60s if straight from high school) then you are not a Boomer. What you describe is the Silent Generation, like my dad.

Born 1946. In the 50s life was tough here as a kid, no jobs paid more than .25 Cents and hour. That is Agricultural minimum wage for adults. I graduated in 1964 and all to be had was low paying agriculture jobs. Drafted in 1966 and got away from it all. 1956-1966 were the worst years of our lives.
