New Jersey bill would raise taxes to fund embryo-destruction

The perfect liberal dream!

"Now that summer is over, things are really heating up here in New Jersey – The Garden State! November is rapidly approaching and a $450 million stem cell bond question will be on the ballot for us to answer “Yes” or “No.” The question does not inform voters on what stem cell research will be performed.

As we all know adult stem cells are highly successful – and do not require millions of dollars since they can be derived from bone marrow, umbilical chord blood and even from skin etc. However, this is not the type of research our governor and legislators are striving for with this bond issue. Life-destroying research on human embryos will be big business in New Jersey if this passes in November.

Is this the reputation we want for our state? This Stem Cell Research Act relies on and cites a 2003 NJ law which authorizes researchers to clone and kill human beings by the Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer which was the used to clone Dolly the Sheep. So far, there has not been one cure from embryonic stem cell research. Not only is this so horrific to try and save someone by sacrificing another, but this type of research is taking from resources that could be used to find even more ethical adult stem cells for curing disease.

Our State leaders are obsessed with making NJ one of the first in the nation for embryonic stem cell research, thereby drawing all types of immoral scientific and highly profitable businesses to our state. If, however, not enough funds are collected to pay back the debt owed from the bonds - if scientists do not fall for this bait – our property taxes could be raised.

But all this pales when viewed from God’s Law and we wonder – how did it all get to this point? Isn’t it bad enough that we have so many babies killed by abortion, and now the State wants to kill even more? It is really up to us to speak up, make people aware and write to our legislators telling them “We are not going to take this anymore.” And of course, prayer is our best answer, for God alone can change hearts."

Pass it around!

I found the actual text of the proposed legislation. Read this shame for yourself:

New Jersey Stem Cell Research Bond Act

>AN ACT authorizing the creation of a debt of the State of New Jersey by the issuance of bonds of the State in the aggregate principal amount of $450 million for the purpose of financing stem cell research grants, and the costs thereof, for institutions of higher education and other entities in the State conducting scientific and medical research; providing the ways and means to pay and discharge the principal of and interest on the bonds; providing for the submission of this act to the people at a general election; and making an appropriation therefor. (...) 21. To provide funds to meet the interest and principal payment requirements for the bonds and refunding bonds issued under this act and outstanding, there is appropriated in the order following:

a. Revenue derived from the collection of taxes under the "Sales and Use Tax Act," P.L.1966, c.30 (C.54:32B-1 et seq.), or so much thereof as may be required; and

b. If, at any time, funds necessary to meet the interest, redemption premium, if any, and principal payments on outstanding bonds issued under this act are insufficient or not available, there shall be assessed, levied and collected annually in each of the municipalities of the counties of this State, a tax on the real and personal property upon which municipal taxes are or shall be assessed, levied and collected, sufficient to meet the interest on all outstanding bonds issued hereunder and on the bonds proposed to be issued under this act in the calendar year in which the tax is to be raised and for the payment of bonds falling due in the year following the year for which the tax is levied. The tax shall be assessed, levied and collected in the same manner and at the same time as are other taxes upon real and personal property. <

New Jersey has a bloated budget, tens of thousands of non-working state "workers", and crushing taxes.

And every election, the voters approve expensive bond issues, usually with some feel good description like preserving open space, etc. They always pass. Just like voters will think all this "medical research" is a good thing.

No one will stop to realize they needn't spend half a billion of their tax money to fund a pet research project, when the pharma industry is located here and can pursue anything medically worthwhile. The voters see no connection between these bond issues and taxes.

A piece I wrote on the nonsensical economics of the NJ Bill:

http://freenj.blogspot.com/2007/07/so-easy-even-dmv-can-do-it.html

Not only is it morally wrong, it’s expensive and unlikely to achieve what the liberals expect it to. Mostly it’s just taxpayer funds being thrown down the rathole.

New Jersey bill will raise taxes to (fill in the blank).

The idiot voters of New Jersey are willing to flush $450 Million down a rat hole just for the pleasure of sticking a finger in the eye of President Bush. The promoters of this bill know that people will vote for it because President Bush is against it, so phony-baloney stem cell research is the new favored method for separating taxpayers from their money.

So, which tax does this bill increase? Keeping track of New Jersey taxes is a little hobby of mine. Lately it seems to be taking up more and more of my time, so I’m trying to turn it into a career, somehow...

This measure is nothing more than a $450 million gift to the pharmaceutical industry. Having said that, I'm not sure it's a bad idea on economic grounds -- since people in government in this state are alarmed at the prospect of having one of the state's few viable industries move elsewhere.

FWIW, this is also why last year's tax increases were curiously regressive . . . because income tax hikes on upper-income earners would be devastating to the state's economy.

State of NJ has an unfunded $ 58 billion obligation to state workers and teachers to provide free health insurance when they retire with atleast 25 years of service. Unlike Social Security, this state obligation is a contract between the state and its workers/teachers. The state must meet its obligations or declare bankruptcy. Since NJ has a annual shortfall of $ 5 Billion in her budget financed by borrowing and taxes, add this unfunded obligation, and then add all these new programs on the ballot (stem cell is not the only one), NJ is heading for bankruptcy. Many financial experts stated that by 2012, half of the NJ state budget will be used to service the debt. Sooner or later all this had to collapse. NJ is financially afloat because of New York City who makes money in this global free trade economy (Wall Street makes money if the factory moves overseas or an overseas factory moves to US). It is Wall Street salaries and bonuses that keep the NJ tax revenues coming in. All we need is one economic slowdown or recession and NJ’s tenous financial situation will collapse. I predict that before this century ends, NJ will be the first state in the Union to declare bankruptcy. Anyone have any ideas how that is handled nationally?????

I’m looking forward to that day. While in bankruptcy, New Jersey will likely have every legal means at its disposal to screw its retirees — which is a good thing, because there’s no reason why a retired government employee should have any more protection than a retired steelworker.

Last week Corzine said there was a state budget deficit. Now they suddenly need tax money to fund this monstrosity. If embryo stem cell research is so vital, then why doesn't Corzine cut a personal check to fund it?
