It's Europe's doom that Walter Lacqueur explores in this clearly written book. He doesn't say anything others have not said but he says it better. There are three threats to Europe's future. The first comes from demographic decline. Europeans are not reproducing. The second threat comes from the presence of a growing immigrant population, a large part of which is not interested in integration. As the population ages, the need for immigrant labor increases, and the sources of such labor are North Africa, the Middle East, Pakistan and Bangladesh. When I recently drove to Antwerp from the South of France, I thought I had arrived in Casablanca. There are parts of Brussels where the police are enjoined not to be seen eating or drinking during Ramadan. Similar accomodations are occuring all over Europe. The third threat comes from the existence of the welfare state and the welfare state mentality. The right of French train drivers to retire on full pension at age 50 is probably more important to them than the right of free speech. Laqueur sees Europe declining into a kind of genteel theme park - if it's lucky. There might be a real struggle for power as the immigrants and their descendants become numerically strong enough to take on the native population. One important question is why Europeans have abjectly surrendered to the dishonest nostrums of multiculturalism. Why, for example, can a couple of Dutch children be told by their teacher to remove the Dutch flag from their schoolbags because it might offend children of Moroccan descent? Why do German courts rule that beating women is a religious right for Turks?See signs for passport holders written in Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, and Hindu scripts - presumably for the benefit of British citizens who can't read the Latin alphabet?

Buchanan had the same thesis a few years ago. I read his book (well written btw).
As Europe becomes more and more Islamisized (if that’s a word) some thought had better be given to the art that is one of the legacies of western civilization. I would think that after a while there will probably be a movement to denounce the statues and paintings by Michelangelo, the religious panel paintings of Giotto, Vermeer etc, particularly as Europe elects more muslims to its respective governments. The early art of western civilization will be looked upon as corruption much as the taliban looked upon then destroyed the statues of Buddha in Afghanistan. Tolerance is not in the makeup of the mohammedans.
Kind of like that old Richard Pryor bit: “They ain’t as many of y’all as there used to be. Y’all quit f***in’?!?!?”
We in the U S of A will have to dump our Spanish-speaking illegals to make room for all the European refugees of the VERY NEAR future. A choice will have to be made, and I for one choose to preserve our European heritage over a bunch of trespassers.
I dunno if it will even be possible to save Europe’s art treasures. Paintings, maybe—but not anything that isn’t VEERY portable.
I’ll have to pick that one up.
Here’s an experiment I’d like to see. Take 100 liberals at random. Tell them that Christians have been protesting nudity and sexuality in great works of art and have been demanding that they be hidden from public view. Then, tell another 100 liberals that Muslims are offended by the same art works.
My guess is that there would be a different reaction each time. The libs would be adamant that the Christians had no right to object to art, and they’d denounce the “Bible thumpers” for their intolerance. But you’d get a different reaction regarding the Muslims. Some libs would support the art, but they’d be careful to not offend the Muslims. There’d be no talk of intolerant “Koran thumpers”. They’d express hope that our Muslim friends would eventually understand our ideas of art and call the whole dispute an unfortunate misunderstanding. Other libs, though, would likely support banning the art, or at least creating special secluded areas in museums where people can only view such art by making a deliberate effort, so as to protect the Muslims from inadvertently being “shocked” by it during a casual visit to the art gallery.
Here’s a great website that keeps up with news on the Islamic tide in Europe:

He concludes that Europe will slowly fall away into insignificance.
I would argue that they are well on their way right now.
Their military can’t protect their own countries, their per capita income is not so great (France has the same per capita income as Mississippi - 46th in the US) and here are large areas of Muslim ghettos where non-Muslims dare not go. Their countries are more socialist that capitalist. Some 2% of Europe is Christian and most people are secular.
They have been swirling down the toilet for decades and the flush will be complete sooner rather than later.
I have lived in a Muslim country; as Europe and it’s culture is eclipsed, the Western world will pass into a new dark age. The “accomodations” being made in Europe are but the first signs of this change, but I believe that if we look closely at what’s happening in Britain and the U.S. we see the nascent beginnings of this emerging dark age. Tell-tale signs are such things as the emergence of the surveillance/police state, abandonnment of the criminal standard, “guilty until proven innocent”, plummeting birth rates, and ever increasing government control of the population’s activities, habits and behavior. These strictures will result in a percipitous decline in both creativity and productivity and an end to the ownership society of wealth opportunity. The great bulk of the population will be reduced to something akin to involontary servitude and serfdom a la the retrograde no-growth economies of Cuba and now, Venzuela. Starvation, malnutrition, disease and death en masse will follow, but will be hardly noticed as the Government controlled MSM outlets focus instead on the steady drumbeat of propaganda sugar coated with the endless stream of feel good, pornographic images of the 24 hour party. To be sure of course, there will be the Big “D” Democracy, a steady stream of pointless elections for which the outcome is predetermined, much like what we’re seeing unfold in ‘08. Thus, the West will pass, not with a bang but a wimper. All that truly remains is to write it’s epitaph.
This is the result of self-hatred coming out of World War I and II and decoloniation, fed by the mentality that says abortion and birth control are a-okay.
Norway, for example, has had 400,000 legal abortions, and also has 400,000 turd world immigrants. Not a coincidence.
A wise Mexican politician once noted with respect to our southwestern border states that “to populate is to govern”. If Europeans and Americans want to govern the future, they’ll have to focus on multiplying their children, not their bank accounts.
Its amazing that believers in evolution, such as modern liberals, can fail to heed its simplest and most important lesson about the necessity of reproductive success.
Even in the most highly secularized lands like Belgium, 15-20% of the people attend Church every week.
ping to myself
Mark Steyn has a better handle on the problems of secularism.
No way it's lucky. The muslims will have no interest in supporting 55 year old European retirees. There will be a mass exodus out of Europe by retirees to the US, Canada, Australia and NZ when the retirement benefits are cut. The smart ones will have their money out long before-hand because the muslims will quickly figure out how to use the mechanisms of state control to keep the assets in Europe.
I've already taken my boy to England. We'll see Paris and Germany, Italy and Greece in the next few years. I want him to see where modern civilization emerged before it is gone. In the not too distant future, those will be dangerous vacations for Christians. Not too long after that, we will be wondering why we didn't move the art in the Louvre out of France before the muslims blew it up.
“...as Europe and its culture is eclipsed, the Western world will pass into a new dark age...”
We’re already there, IMO.
In the case of Germany, the problem is self-inflicted with the importation of guest workers, primarily from Turkey, who have never gone home.
You’re right. Demography is destiny. When Europe was at its peak of power, its population in proportion to that of the rest of the world was much larger than it is today. The Viking conquests which reached as far as N. America, Sicily, and Russia, were apparently connected with a population explosion in Scandinavia resulting from the perfectly natural “global warming” of the early Medieval Warming Period. Now Third World populations are booming, largely because of improved sanitation, health care, and food sources—all introduced by Western colonialists.
This was recent news out of Germany
Iranian-Born German Soccer Player Refuses to Play Israel
“The team has accepted his request, angering Germany’s Jewish lobby.” Why did they accept his request? Why didn’t they tell him that accepting a spot on the German national team involved doing what the team does? Of course, he himself is threatened: this is Iranian thuggery reaching into Europe. From Spiegel Online (thanks to Fjordman):
An Iranian-German soccer player who plays for the German national Under-21 side has asked not to play against Israel in a friendly on October 12. The team has accepted his request, angering Germany’s Jewish lobby.
An Iranian-born player for Germany’s under-21 national soccer team has caused controversy by asking to be excused from playing a match against Israel in Tel Aviv this Friday.
Ashkan Dejagah, 21, said in a statement posted on the German Football Federation’s Web site that his reasons for not playing were “of a very personal nature and have to do with my close family.”
But the player had previously been quoted in Bild newspaper as saying: “There are political reasons. Everyone knows I’m a German Iranian.” Dejagah has dual citizenship. Berlin newspaper B.Z. quoted him as saying: “I have more Iranian than German blood in my veins. Besides, I’m doing this out of respect. After all, my parents are Iranian.”
“I have nothing against Israel. But I’m worried about having problems later when traveling to Iran,” he told the Berlin tabloid B.Z.
Are you referring to “State of Emergency”? I read it, too. I don’t agree with some of Pat’s political views but he was absolutely correct in the views expressed by that book. It was very well documented and researched. By the way, the subtitle sums it all up: “The Third World Invasion and Conquest of America.” I think we Americans should wake up if it isn’t already too late. What Dalrymple is talking about in Europe is already beginning here.
