CA: A promise eviscerated - Governor forgets campaign vow, signs bill (That's Our Gubby!)

When Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ran for governor in 2003, he promised to veto any bill that had not gone through the policy committees of the Senate and Assembly. This pledge, he said, was aimed at ending the practice of gut-and-amend bills – bills rewritten in the wee hours of the Legislature to avoid public scrutiny.

"Bills are passed in a rush, in the middle of the night," Schwarzenegger said at the time. "There is no such thing as democracy in the dark."

Schwarzenegger swept into office in 2003 because of such promises. Ever since, he has selectively gutted and amended them. ...

--snip--

On Sunday, hours before the bill-signing deadline, Schwarzenegger signed Assembly Bill 1053, by Speaker Fabian Núñez, which will make it easier for Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz to obtain state housing bond funds for a mega project he is spearheading in Los Angeles.

Before this bill was rushed through, only developers, nonprofits and agencies with a mission of building housing could apply for Proposition 1C funds for infill housing.

AB 1053 alters that formula by allowing Business Improvement Districts – entities often controlled by retail and office developers – to compete for these funds. Not surprisingly, Anschutz belongs to a business district that wants to redevelop a corridor near the Staples Center, one of his many Los Angeles holdings.

--snip--

... The Times also reported last year that Schwarzenegger had received income in 2005 from the Anschutz Film Group.

For all these reasons, Schwarzenegger should have stayed away from AB 1053 and then vetoed it as an example of "democracy in the dark." Instead, he approved a stealth bill that helps a former employer. It was a shameful finale to a sad session.

One has '(D)' after the name, the other has '(R)'. Other than that, not much.

In another thread they were talking about ones favorite sci-fi show. My favorite is Terminator 2 but I didn’t bother to mention it. Schwarzenegger has become such a disappointment its disgusting. Then I realized what really has happened.

Schwarzenegger has morphed into Bill Clinton less the Lewinski baggage. And I helped put him there. :<((((

Just your typical Democrat masquerading as a liberal Republican. Keep your eye on Ah-nold and you’ll see what a President Rudy (or Hillary) will do for the entire country.

Don’t get me wrong, I like some of his movies, some stunk tho too. As to his choice in associates and who he alows to counsel him and such, whether by marriage or business connections, leaves a lot to be desired.

The remark as to he ‘morphed’ into Bubba is not totally unfounded either, imo.

One just needs to remember what crowd of folks he and Bubba and the rest of the “Elite” are puppets for these days.

As to you putting him there, he had a lot of help. The choices pee-ons like you and others was controlled from the get-go.

Not really. But neither was I prepared to call that account the dumbest Republican troll I had ever encountered.

I was merely imitating something that Fair Opinion might say.

The Austrian is a disgrace. People supported him in the Recall on the vain hope that he would make California more favorable to Republicans. But thanks to him, California is more rodent than ever. 2010 is almost guaranteed to bring in that La Raza Mayor of LA to Sacramento.

I don’t know what Anschutz’s specific relationship to Arnie is, but he has hooked up in these land deals with drug-dealing-mobster and pardon-gate-beneficiary Carlos Vignali.

http://www.laweekly.com/news/features/las-underground-power-broker/619/
LA’s Underground Power Broker

(snip)

Today Vignali is where he has been for 30 years, in the South Park area of downtown, where he owns parking lots and warehouses in the shadows of the Convention Center and Staples Center. With real estate hotter than ever in that part of town, and the conversion of industrial property in vogue, his longstanding ownership of parcels in key locations gives him an important role in mapping the future of Los Angeles. Even more so considering that media mogul and reclusive billionaire Philip Anschutz is building a sports-and-entertainment district in South Park that his company, Anschutz Entertainment Group, is touting as the next Times Square. Such good fortune is far more than what Adams and Wehr think the Vignalis deserve.

Vignali’s money is no good in politics anymore, but business is still business, and he still has a few alliances with some who have access to City Hall. Vignali, a man who might have stayed below the radar forever if it weren’t for his drug-dealing son, has already brokered one land deal with Anschutz.
