We have reason to believe that we now have detained all of the leadership and the key operatives of the indirect fire cell that attacked Victory Base last week. Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks
We have reason to believe that, through two intelligence-driven operations over the last few days, we now have detained all of the leadership and the key operatives of the indirect fire cell that attacked Victory Base last week, said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks, Multinational Division-Baghdad deputy commanding general. Acting on intelligence reports, soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, detained four individuals in the raid on Oct. 15, 2007.
During the course of the operation, the extremists tried to evade capture by hiding in the Iraq Ministry of Agriculture compound in the Rusafa District of eastern Baghdad. The soldiers were compelled to enter the Ministry building in pursuit.
After positively identifying one of the extremists as one of five individuals wanted by Multinational Division-Baghdad in connection with a rocket attack on Victory Base Camp, soldiers assigned to 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, took the man into custody. Three known associates also were detained.
