Thompson: Giuliani's NYC Was "Sanctuary" For Illegals

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson brandished his conservative credentials in Cobb County on Thursday, accusing GOP rival Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, of promoting the city's "sanctuary" status as place where illegal immigrants could work and live without harassment from local authorities.

"I voted to do away with sanctuary cities," said Thompson, who is was in town for two fundraisers.

"I don't know where he stands today on that. I know where he stood then."

About 60 supporters gathered to greet Thompson in a hanger at McCollum Airport. One member of the audience asked Thompson if he regretted work he did for an abortion rights group as a Washington lobbyist.

"That was private life," Thompson said. As a U.S. senator from Tennessee, he said, he voted "100 percent" with the agenda of anti-abortion forces.

“He said he voted in 1996 to outlaw sanctuary cities, where city employees are not required to report illegal immigrants to federal authorities.”

For which 1996 Bill did FRed voted to outlaw sanctuary cities?

Would 60 people be considered a large crowd where he was? Its beginning to worry me.

When he becomes President Thompson, we will see the true American culture of life.

From the article:

Having not attended, not knowing if it was a scheduled event and not knowing how large the hanger bay was, I can't truthfully answer the question...

I would assume that he is talking about the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act.

Whichever candidate convinces me he will enforce immigration laws will get my vote.

We simply cannot afford to import another poorly educated underclass. We have enough trouble taking care of our own poorly educated and dependent citizens.

I find that when I’m arguing with Rudy supporters in real life, the sanctuary city argument is the most effective. I’ve turned a few people completely off Rudy by citing his record on immigration. Fred should shout this one from the rooftops.
