Westside Hospital Expected to Seek Bankruptcy Protection(70 CA hospitals have closed in 11 yrs.)
Los Angeles Times ^ | October 20, 2007 | Daniel Costello

Posted on 10/20/2007 5:27:29 AM PDT by kellynla

Brotman Medical Center, a key healthcare provider serving Los Angeles' Westside, is expected to seek protection from creditors in Bankruptcy Court as early as next week, according to three executives familiar with the matter.

Administrators at the 420-bed hospital in Culver City have tried for months to avoid filing a bankruptcy petition but have continued struggling to pay its growing debt.

Brotman became the center of a firestorm last month when state health inspectors released a report finding that doctors and nurses failed to provide proper care to a mentally disabled woman, who died after a series of medical mistakes.

The medical center is expected to file under bankruptcy provisions that will give management more time to fix its financial problems.

Since 1996, more than 70 community hospitals have closed across the state, with a disproportionate share -- more than 50 -- in Southern California. Regionally, 14 emergency rooms have closed in the last five years, including 10 in Los Angeles County.

And does anyone know why? Anyone...Ferris? That's right! Because illegals continue to receive medical care and do not pay for it! And we can all thank GWB for refusing to enforce the immigration laws, refusing to fine employers who hire illegals and refusing to secure BOTH borders. We can only hope & pray that the Gelding Old Party gets a testicle & spine implant before next year and nominates a true blue conservative next time for POTUS.

Brotman opened more than 75 years ago as an eight-bed clinic and has grown into one of the largest hospitals in the Southland. In recent years, however, it has struggled with rising costs and lower revenue. Its losses soared from $268,000 in 2001 to nearly $15 million in 2005, when Tenet Healthcare Corp. sold it to local investors.

Gee. What could have happened just after 2001 to make losses go up, what, 6,000 per cent?

That is your true door-closer on these hospitals.

The Board of Trustees should file a lawsuit against the Government of Mexico.

How about our government using illegals to bankrupt our hospitals so they can take total control? Nothing happens in this once free nation without a reason.

Hospitals bankrupt.

New law to reduce CO2 by 25% means no new concrete construction.

No power from coal plants means double power power prices.

Bigger deficit means more taxes.

More taxes drive away business and people.

You didn't read your own post. The operative expression in that politically-correct article from the LA Times is "Growing numbers of uninsured." That's a nice way of saying "illegal aliens." Hospitals are absolutely overwhelmed by the costs of taking care of illegals for whom they receive no reimbursement. One Mexican girl with a premature baby can cost the hospital half a million bucks. They are required by law to deliver her baby, and then they may be stuck with providing care for the neonate because no other hospital in the area is stupid enough to accept the transfer. Believe me, this is the least of it. The best management in the world could not cope with this financial hemorrhage.

If we received some border security and deportation of illegal aliens from the Feds,
we wouldn’t have to treat all these illegals who show up at our emergency rooms...and BTW, if you don’t think the same is happening everywhere else in America including AZ, think again!

And remember, it's not just the emergency care but the rest of it that's really expensive to the hospital. If Rogelio shows up at the ER with a heart attack they can't just kick him out a few hours later. He may need a cardiac catheterization and/or allied procedures, and if the hospital administrators can't find another hospital silly enough to accept the transfer of his case, they're stuck with him and $75K in costs (not including the salaries of all the house staff who had to take care of him).

and of course, we all know that there weren’t 25K “emergency room patients”...not even in South Central L.A. are there that many “emergencies” in a year.
The illegals are milking the system for every dime they can.

When hospitals enter into a contractual agreement with state, federal, and private insurers, they are required to abide by the terms of the contract. Thus you are correct in the sense that federal medicaid/medicare monies have enormous strings attached.

The problem has existed for a long time and will never be resolved. The "illegals" are merely part of the problem. To Blame Bush is akin to blaming God for creating such a medically vulnerable species.

Moreover, what has California done right lately?

It is happening everywhere. I owned shares in Health Management Associates(HMA), a southeast hospital chain. Reading the quarterly reports for a couple of years before taking my loss, the bad debt expense kept rising and rising. This is illegal immigrants. Check out the stock price to see the effect they have.

What you are missing is that many of the patients who come to these hospitals are not even Medicaid or Medicare recipients. There is no contract at all; they are simply treated for free. And they arrive carrying diseases not present in our native population, or with conditions that would have been minimized with American-style medical care but are now catastrophic.

It's certainly true that illegal aliens are only part of the problem. We have our own home-grown problem patients here. But at least the home-grown patients have Medicaid and sometimes Medicare coverage that helps compensate the hospital to some small degree; the foreigners do not.

of course they did...but they did at least mention “uninsured” which everyone who lives in L.A. knows the vast majority are illegals...

“Somebody needs to write this sad newspaper a letter”

Believe me I have for decades, but do you think they are paying attention? Obviously not, which is the reason their circulation has dropped like a rock and they can’t give away newspapers! Build TWO walls, secure BOTH borders, fine employers who hire illegals and deport ALL illegals...including the incarcerated...why should American taxpayers pay to incarcerate 100K of other countires’ criminals in state & federal prisons nationwide ...it’s not like we’re long on space and funding & short on American criminals! At a minimum cost of $25K a head, that amounts to 2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS A YEAR!

The law requires that every patient be seen and evaluated. At that point, the hospital has already spent so much money that they go ahead and provide treatment. It also lowers liability risks.

What the law does not require, surprisingly enough, is that a hospital actually have an emergency room. I have often wondered why hospitals don't close their emergency departments.

And does anyone know why? Anyone...Ferris? That's right! Because illegals continue to receive medical care and do not pay for it!

Partly true.

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) mandates free ER treatment and free obstetric care, and the Center for Medicare Services (CMS, formerly HCFA) forbids charging others to make up for the free care.

Now, the government is stupid, and easily fooled, so overbilling to make up for the legally-required free ER and obstetric care is prevalent - but the Feds are getting better at detecting it, as you can see from all their claims of "fraud".

So, hospitals are on a glide path to extinction, at least if they a) have an ER, b) deliver babies, and c) don't cheat.

The illegals are hastening the process where there are a lot of them, but the hospitals would eventually fail anywhere, even if all the illegals went home tomorrow.
