US official: Israel had mole inside Syrian site
Jerusalem Post ^ | October 21, 2007 | HILARY LEILA KRIEGER

Israel obtained detailed photographs from inside an alleged Syrian nuclear facility prior to carrying out an air strike on September 6, ABC News reported over the weekend.

An unnamed senior source in the US told the news network that the Mossad had discovered in the summer that Syria was constructing a nuclear facility and proceeded to either place a mole inside the plant or convince one of the workers to supply Israel with intelligence.

Through the mole, the source said, Israel received pictures from the ground that showed a large cylindrical structure, trucks, and a pumping station - all of which would be necessary components for a nuclear facility. Since the site was not yet operating, the official said, no evidence of fissionable material was found.

Also significant, ABC reported, was the site's design, which the official identified as "North Korean."

After obtaining the photos, the official said, Israel approached the CIA. The US looked up satellite coordinates for the site - which the official said was located some 160 kilometers from the Iraqi border in a remote part of the Syrian desert - and helped Israel pinpoint possible "drop sites."

Israel urged the US to carry out the attack, the ABC report said, and US officials began examining options for a strike. Possible tactics were assessed, including scenarios involving a helicopter raid and placing special forces on the ground.

However, word came from the White House that the US preferred not to attack, as it had no concrete proof that the facility was built to produce nuclear material. According to the report, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates attempted to convince Israel "to confront, not attack."

Is there really somebody in there or do they just say so and let the Syrians go paranoid? Imagine the easy-mannered tactics the Syrians would use to locate such a leaker, with ALL workers being suspect.

Bingo IC!

Not the boy dictator can't trust all his atomic scientist so he purges them all, oops no program left, clever of the Israeli intelligence community. If they are not purged doubt lingers, surveillance makes them less productive, either way it is a win-win.

The State Depts' ONLY goals are the destruction of Israel and America.

"Hurry up, 2009."

What good is that going to do? The same people will still be in the state dept., maybe not the secretary of state, but the ones who run things. Also in the CIA. I don't hold out a lot of hope that anything is going to change.

I would have to think the Mossad didn’t appreciate ABC’s report a whole lot.

So many will never get it, that so subtle fact that we are managing the Mid East so as to keep the Saudi Oil from coming under unfriendly control. It is not a bad thing, just the reality. And in the meantime we get to kill thousands of rat islamofascists on Mid East soil rather than on American soil. If it ever actually gets unmanagable we can turna few Arab cities into glass covered parking lots. But the democrats are creating just enough obstruction so that the option of what to do when it gets unmanable is fast being lost. The democrats are more of a threat to this nation than the Islamofascists.

That's been pretty much explicit for more than six decades. When FDR met with King Abdul Aziz Ibn-Saud, on a US warship in the Suez canal, the understanding was that the US would promise to back the House of Saud if the Saudis promised to maintain the flow of oil.

At the time, it was a hedge against Hitler, then it was a hedge against the USSR. But today, you've got to look at the Saudis and ask, "with friends like these ..."

The democrats are more of a threat to this nation than the Islamofascists.

Really? How many planes have Democrats flown into skyscrapers? How many Democrats have strapped on suicide bomb belts and boarded buses? How many armed militants does the Democratic Party have?

Sorry to pounce on you with this, but it's been a gripe of mine for a long time. There is a difference, one we're missing, between an opponent and an enemy. It was not an army of Democrats or of Republicans that defeated Hitler.

Without the enemy within this nation, the medieval Islamist cannot defeat this nation. But with the undermining of our nation from within by the leftist democrats of today playing political empowerment by undermining our military and the commanders, we are in far graver danger than in WWII.

My apologies for the duplicate post.

I always search on the title, but waimea.man used a different title than the original article, so I missed it.

In any case, I believe that Thinkin' Gal was referring to the special date that I posted regarding moles and not as an affirmation that I was the first to post the article.

"An unnamed senior source in the US"

I sure hope it's disinformation to get Syria to tear apart their people in a hopeless mole hunt..... if the leaker is following a different agenda and is helping Syria to pinpoint the source(s) of Israeli info then that's appalling (but not too surprising nowadays). Still, it would be great if the Syrians just self-destructed without too much outside force....
