Iran no 'clear and present danger': IAEA chief

PARIS - Iran would need ‘between three and eight years’ to develop an atomic bomb and constitutes no immediate danger, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei, said in an interview published Monday.

‘I want to get people away from the idea that Iran represents a clear and present danger and that we’re now facing the decision whether to bombard Iran or let them have the bomb. We’re not in that situation at all,’ the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency told the French daily Le Monde.

‘I can’t judge whether Iran intends to develop a nuclear bomb. It would need between three and eight years to do so. All intelligence services are agreed on that,’ said ElBaradei.

The IAEA chief continued: ‘We still have a lot of time to use diplomatic tools, including sanctions, dialogue, all the ‘carrots’ and ‘sticks’ we have at our disposal.’

Last week, US President George W. Bush evoked the possibility of World War III if the international community were to stand by and let Iran develop a nuclear bomb.

‘If you’re interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them (the Iranians) from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon,’ Bush had said.

US Vice President Dick Cheney, in his turn, said on Sunday that the United States would not permit Iran to get nuclear weapons and warned of ‘serious consequences’ if Teheran refused to stop enriching uranium.

Taking advice of nuclear technology from M.ElBaradei is like having Madonna in charge of a school’s abstinence program.

Just look at the contradiction in these two sentences. What an ass.

Unless, for incidence, Iran builds the components, then passes them off to a terrorist group. Iran might not ever assemble an operational bomb on their soil. Does that mean that we shouldn't stop them from passing the technology to others who would use it? The IAEA is clearly enabling these Iranian thugs.....

Of course, Mr. El Baradei would like us to wait until there is no doubt that Iran is a clear and present danger - say, until the day after they detonate their first nuclear weapon.

When your first name is Mohamad, how could you POSSIBLY consider Iran a danger?

No,they won’t be a clear and *present* danger until they deploy their first nuke....in about a year,eh mohammed? Somehow I doubt that Israel will wait until the 9th Century mullahs in Tehran become a *present*,as well as a *clear*,danger before they take action.

Typical UN behavior - deny the problem even exists until Iran starts producing nuclear weapons and sharing the technology with terrorist elements around the globe, then issue condemnations and strongly-worded letters. That'll teach 'em who's boss.

It always worked in the past, right?

Iran does not need to develop a nuclear bomb if they buy one of the already developed N.Korean bombs. ElBaradei, an Egyptian LAWYER and career UN bureaucrat with NO scientific background whatsoever, would never 'know' whether Iran (or Syria?) were a 'clear and present danger', or not.

Right on ! I think it was Newt G. who said that Iran is only 18 hours away (flight time from Korea) from having a nuke......
