Fire officials are now stating that the Orange County Santiago fire was purposely set and there is speculation that other fires may have also been deliberate. See Interactive Map
Fire officials found three separate “points of origin,” all near the intersection of Silverado Canyon Road and Santiago Canyon Road. Two were on one side of the road, and the third was on the other. “Whoever did this knew what they were doing, said Kris Concepcion, a fire authority battalion chief. Also, the fire traveled 3 miles in its first 20 minutes when it was ignited about 6 p.m. Sunday, he said.
We are NOT implying that the California fires are an act of terrorism however; the threat of pyro-terrorist attacks pose a significant risk to the U.S. and the fires in California and in Greece earlier this year should be a wake-up call.
In 2003 an FBI memo alerted law enforcement agencies that an al-Qaeda terrorist being held in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.
It was reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country.
The detainee believed that significant damage to the U.S. economy would result and once it was realized that the fires were terrorist acts, U.S. citizens would put pressure on the U.S. government to change its policies, the memo said.
How Can So Many Fires Be By Natural Causes ?
A Local News Radio talk show host in San Diego asked, “how can so many fires, in so many places, in such a short period of time, all be caused by natural causes”.

al-Qaeda Detainee Spoke of Fire Plot
As we have stated before. If you see anything suspicious, report it to law enforcement immediately.
UPDATE: Video - Officials say arson now suspected in Orange County Fire
UPDATE: From Los Angeles Fox News
“I’m sad to report this is an arson fire,” OCFA Chief Chip Prather announced at an early morning briefing. “There were three separate starts: two on one side of the road and one on the other, and obviously we are actively investigating that.”
Links - A number of blogs and websites have sprung up to report on the fires. We will provide links to a couple we’ve found.

jihadi assymetry...
Al Qaeda?
Let me be the first to say.........ILLEGALS doing the arson that Americans won't do.
It's not rocket science or hard to imagine and I wrote and warned of such possibilities by enemies of this nation back in 2001 and 2002 in the Dragon's Fury Series.
Once the odor of smoke dissipates, there will be a strong stench of MudSlimes.
The Santa Ana winds always bring out the firebugs.
Isn’t there a verse in the Koran about the “breath of Satan”?
Wasn’t that the case in Greece a few months back?
They feel safe from an attack in kind because sand doesn't burn.
They seem to have forgotten that it can be instantly turned into glass should we so desire...
Hmm. And Obama Bin Laden just gave his ‘win one for the Gipper’ speech.
I had a sign “I Slam Islam” on by bench at work. They made me take it down.........
No chance at all the ROP, either a right wing firebug(media choice) or a lefty evio-terrorst...../sarcasm
This morning Foxnews reported a massive number of homes destroyed in this fire overnight. IIRC, the number was 700.
HELLO??? The entire koran is the breath of Satan
I was very suspicious about this from the start. My main suspects would be leftists of some sort: Islamofacists or eco-terrorits. But it could be ordinary pyros.
Indeed you did. Good series, well written.
Of course, it could just be the result of natural causes, given the extraordinary weather conditions Southern California has experienced recently.
Honestly, I think the most likely culprits could be people who are in financial trouble due to the real estate and mortgage markets. Getting insurance for a totally destroyed house would solve a lot of people’s problems right now (from individual homeowners to real estate developers), and having their loss be part of a large scale fire like this minimizes the chance that the circumstances of their particular home loss will be closely scrutinized by an insurer looking for evidence of arson. It appears that much of this fire originated from accidental causes, but the beginning of a big fire in their area could well have started a few people down the road of thinking “Actually it wouldn’t be so bad if my house (that I’m about to lose anyway) burned down” and then on to “I could make sure that happens”.
Are these terrorists?
At a billion dollars, this is the same cost as the WTC.
Its been 8 years and something needs to be done. We can’t be worrying about people with matches.
That's what I was wondering. Never heard much follow up on that from the main stream media. (Or here on Free Republic for that matter.)
People desperately wanted to pin the last set of bad Southern California fires a couple of years ago on Muslim terrorists.
Turned out to be a random assortment of accidents, idiots, and assorted arsonists, as it usually is.
They did arrest one guy with a weird-sounding Armenian name for a wildfire arson and the more clueless on FR briefly got excited thinking he might be a Muslim or Arab.
Thought about it earlier with the release of the recent UBL tape.
Similar fires in the Florida Evergades were found to be started by Broward County firefightersfor overtime pay.
hanging , from a burned tree, should be the penalty for such arson
The Japanese Fu-Go balloons did kill a minister and some if not all of his family. Since they were kept a secret to avoid giving away where they landed and how ineffective they were, the family had no idea what they were dealing with.
Yes and it was reported as terrorism and then it was quickly hushed up and nothing more. I know they made approximately 30 arrests.
Could it be terrorist......hmm. most likely tis,so what we gonna do about it..nothing.
There were five starts on the Buckweed Incident
One dirty little secret is a surprisingly large number of wildfire arsons are set by firefighters.
that isnt exactly correct...the santiago cyn fire is just now starting to take homes.....san diego has lost 1750 or so....
Some of the current fires are known to not be arson related.
As for those which are, a lot of the arsonists are caught and prosecuted.
Here’s hoping they catch and prosecute whoever did this whatever their motive.
I don’t know why but I suspect disgruntled “undocumented workers” since these fires are so close to the border with our neighbor to the south.
Seems to me the illegals would love to put a finger in the eye of rich white Californians.
Greece was on fire seems like just a month ago. This is suspicious, although the fire chief interviewed on Coast last night said they weren’t even thinking about causes just then because they were too busy.
Source, please?
I believe that there is a strong possiblility that the fires we are seeing in Southern California...with so many of them cropping up all at once, despite the Sanata Annas and heat wave (which I have personally experienced down there) are very suspicious.
I would not put it past the enemies of this nation to have been the cause...and I am speaking of both the domestic, hard left, useful idiot enemies, as well as the Islamic terrorist enemies. In my mind, during this time of war, they are very much one and the same. They spout the same reason and purpose behind their action and in their public pronouncements support one another.
It wasn't hushed up, it just stopped being discussed on FR because it wasn't the "terrorism" that people wanted to hear about.
Most of the arsons were apparently organized crime types paying to have land cleared for development.
Maybe it’s illegals, terrorists or pyro’s, but my guess is that there were a couple of “investors” who were way, way underwater on their seven-figure mortgages.
Indeed, the ignorati/gliterati and their butt pustules in the media are spreading this meme as we speak. It is like a new form of porn for them, each claim more obscene than the last, the next claim feeding on the insanity of the one it followed.
I honestly await envirofascist claims that earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and meteors are exacerbated by gorebull whoring - pretty much everything else apparently already is, from cold winters, warm summers, diseases, forest fires, tsunamis, hurricanes, too much rain, not enough rain, record snow, green Christmas, crime, poverty, terrorism, hunger, deforestation, species extinction, 3 polar bears drowning, overfishing, Wal*Mart, halitosis, bad knees, bad back, Gore losing in 2000, terrorists wearing panties on head, and Darfur.
It is precisely analogous to the way in which primitive groups blamed themselves for environmental calamity; the people have angered the various gods, with the only chance of redemption being some form of sacrifice, or some act(s) of contrition or self-imposed suffering. The teleological breech left void by the rejection of Judeo-Christian morals will again be filled, and the supplanting substance for secular leftists appears to be deep ecology.
I am curious if the whole of the border line was set a flame how much of a reduction there would be in the crossings for one day. Also it would eliminate areas in which to hide (i.e. trees, bushes etc). I know a weird line of thinking considering the sad content this thread started with, but it made me think the other day how useful it would be if we did controlled burning along the very long border line at least in high crossing areas. Just grasping at straws. lol.
Yes this is an crude example of how any thread can be brought back to illegal immigration. [embarrassed--lol.] God bless all the people threatened by these fires and all those that have lost their homes or belongings. May it al be over soon.

Unfortunately, the bank holding the mortgage would almost certainly be the loss payee on the insurance policy, so all the poor schnook would get would be personal property to the extent of the insurance on that ... which except for a few companies that issue replacement coverage (like USAA for us veterans) is not even close to what they'd lose. Even replacement coverage only covers things to a limit, and most people don't have the personal articles floaters to cover their serious valuables (art, jewelry, silver, computers, musical instruments, etc.). It would be a VERY DUMB DARWIN CANDIDATE who set a wildfire to get out of a bad mortgage - bankruptcy would be less painful!
I hope some competent US agency is monitoring the HUGE mosque in Culver City.
It’s the one that lost an imam after 9-11 when he took a trip to Saudia
Arabia...and was refused entry into the USA when he flew back to Los Angeles.
The mental image of a Wahhabist fuming and threatening the infidels
in a holding pen at LAX waiting for the next plane back to his Sandbox Nation...
...PRICELESS!
I didn’t mean just here on FR, I didn’t hear anything else in the media after the arrests. The whole thing was kinda dropped. Still would be interesting to hear the complete story. Thanks though for giving some clarification as to what the motive was.
Especially interesting to ponder since San Diego County is pretty Republican.
terrorists harming their biggest defenders - no way! /s
They are NOT Santa Ana winds. They ARE Santana winds, meaning Devil winds.
