Yankee Fan Giuliani Backing Red Sox
The Associated Press ^ | 10/23/2007 | JAY LINDSAY

BOSTON (AP) — Sounds like a baseball flip-flop. Rudy Giuliani, a lifelong New York Yankees fan, said Tuesday he's pulling for their most hated rivals, the Boston Red Sox, to win the World Series over the Colorado Rockies.

"I'm rooting for the Red Sox," the Republican presidential contender said in response to a question, sparking applause at the Boston restaurant where he was picking up a local endorsement.

"I'm an American League fan, and I go with the American League team, maybe with the exception of the Mets," he said. "Maybe that would be the one time I wouldn't because I'm loyal to New York."

Giuliani's Yankees lost in the first round of the playoffs, then lost their manager when Giuliani's friend, Joe Torre, refused to accept a pay cut and walked away. Giuliani said the Yankees had "a great season."

The former New York mayor said his declaration of temporary Red Sox loyalty was "not just because I'm here in Massachusetts."

"In Colorado, in the next week or two, you will see, I will have the courage to tell the people of Colorado the same thing, that I am rooting for the Red Sox in the World Series," he said.

Indeed, if Giuliani was pandering, he miscalculated.

In the last presidential election, Colorado went with Republican President Bush, and recent history shows Massachusetts voters would sooner adopt Manhattan clam chowder as the state's official food than vote Republican in 2008.

Of course, just to the north is New Hampshire — home

This reminds me of when Hillary claimed she had always been a Yankee fan.

Like Bill Clinton, there isn't anything Giuliani won't lie about to get elected.

Do we have to find something wrong with every single thing Rudy says? I do the same kind of thing in football, my team is the Steelers but when they don’t make it to the SB I route for the AFC team because that’s my team’s conference, I’ll even route for the other teams from our division if my Steelers are eliminated early. I like those champions to be as close to my team as possible. Except last time with the Colts in it, I can’t route for a dome team no matter what conference they come from.

I don’t think that there is much advantage to Rudy in making this comment, if it is a lie. He won’t win Massachusetts anyway, and he has a chance to win Colorado. What would be the point of lying?

Can’t we just assume that he just favor the Sox?

We don't have to find it, it's there everytime he avoids answering a direct question. Which is every time.

Why is he lying? I do the same thing, in fact in past years if the Red Sox are out of the series and the Yanks are still in I cheer for them.......just because I’m a sox fan doesn’t mean I can’t cheer for some other team....sheesh.

He seems to have directly answered this question, and the whiners are out in force over it. Really people it’s sports, I love sports and all but perspective here, nobody should ever care which team a candidate is routing for ever.

No, but it gives us a chance to slam Rudy, which he deserves every chance we get.

I do, considering Rudy has attended more Yankee games than visiting the real heroes at Ground Zero.

Boston is basically a big-ass suburb of New York anyway.

It just makes you look sad and pathetic, desperate for reasons to hate on the guy. One should save one’s indignation for when it’s righteous.

If you were a sports fan, you'd know what he is was lying about. People don't root for their bitter rivals to win anything.

The sports media is justifiably ripping Rudy a new one.

This is just more proof of what a lying phony this guy is.

Why is it conservatives can't apply the same standard to liberal Republicans as they do liberal Democrats.

I guarantee to you that Rush, Hannity, etc. would be all over a Democrat if they pulled this stunt.

Anytime I can bash Rudy, it's rightgeous. Or are you supporting him in any form or fashion?

Don't like it? Don't respond. Pretty simple, even for you.

I thought the Ground Zero guys had gotten tired of photo-ops distracting them from the real and important work they were doing. Sporting events are an appropriate place for glad handing smiles. It’s not like any of the Rudy haters would have actually credited him with sincerity if he went to Ground Zero all the time anyway, that’s the problem with deciding everything he does is wrong, nothing he can do will be right.

Rudy is rooting for the American League in the Series. I’ll bet he roots for the American League in the all-star game. I’m an Angels fan and I root for the American League.

What a bunch of nitpicking.
