A third way for the religious right?
LA Times ^ | 24 October 2007 | Staff

Some Christian conservatives are so disenchanted by the 2008 Republican field for president that they are mulling whether to desert the GOP and form a third party. We're tempted to say "go ahead." But if religious conservatives don't want to marginalize themselves, they will instead take former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani's advice and resist subjecting candidates to a litmus test on abortion or any other single issue.

Giuliani and his fellow Republican candidates spoke over the weekend to more than 2,000 "values voters" assembled in Washington by the Family Research Council and other conservative groups. They were literally preaching to the converted, and they did more than assent to the proposition that religion has a role in the public square. Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee promised that his first act as president would be to "go into the Oval Office and close the door and pray for the wisdom to know what was right." The thrice-married Giuliani felt compelled to admit to the group that "I find myself too often failing to reach the ideals of my religious and moral beliefs." Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who recently expressed his preference that the president be a Christian, said he was sustained during his captivity in North Vietnam by "faith in my comrades, faith in my country and faith in my God."

These confessions reflect the clout of Christian conservatives. Yet some in the movement are willing to sacrifice that influence on the altar of absolutism.

....they are mulling whether to desert the GOP and form a third party.

The MSM and the libs are drooling over this possibility. Hopefully we learned from the Perot fiasco that shooting ourselves in the foot is not an option.

Seems to me All Giuliani has to do is CHANGE HIS MIND. By now he must have figured out he gets no benefit from abortion ~

Giuliani has check mated himself.

Giuliani did a calculus that he could beat hillary by eliminating the abortion issue for her and attract democrats.

The problem is if Giuliani is Hillary R, the race will be Hillary D vs Hillary R.

In that case Hillary D wins.
Did you know Hillary Clinton was Senator of NY on 9/11?

“But if religious conservatives don’t want to marginalize themselves, they will instead take former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani’s advice and resist subjecting candidates to a litmus test on abortion or any other single issue.”

That’s a false dichotomy. The LA Times is trying to present the only two choices as being nominate Rudy or go third party. Of course there’s always the more logical and likely choice, which is nominate a pro-life candidate. Problem solved, much to the LA Times’ chagrin.

Then again, maybe he’s actually just being honest, and not angling for benefit. I can respect that, but I respectfully won’t vote for him.

This third party talk is being brought to us courtesy of the Clinton campaign. It worked for them in 1992 so they think it will again. You know what? It will...

The LA Times loves the idea of two liberals from New York running for President. With a non-choice like that, they can’t lose.

Yeah, the Hildabeast’s presence offended the terrorists. They then took it out on the voters.

The Republican party has done well, standing for life, and it will continue to do well if it remembers people like Rudy are completely unacceptible. There are limits to compromise. Most of the Republicans I talk to simply will not cast a vote for Giulani.

The point is the Giuliani constantly points out his 9/11 position. Clinton can trump him easily.

No Giuliani, No Problem.

Stamd fast my friend and be very vocal to every Giuliani pragmatist that you meet. You know I will. AS for myself, I have judged Romney to be the most viable contestant with a chance to win in Nov. Giuliani is 30% the rest is a fractured 70% if we hang together, we shall not hang separately.

If the Republicans want their votes, they should not pick Guiliani for their candidate - its up to the ‘Pubbies, not the Christian Right.

Face it. If Guiliani is elected, or even wins the Primary, it is probably the end of Republican Party as the party of life and conservatism.

Yeah, let’s just throw principles out the window and elect a pro-abort, gun-grabbing, gun-maker suing, cross-dressing northeastern elitist liberal. The intelligentsia just can’t figure out why all us rubes out here in the hinterland would be so absolutist. I mean, after all if the right to life and self defense aren’t such big issues for the enlightened why should we get hung up on these peripheral??????????

I beleive the Giuliani fade is already in progress and the wailing and gnashing of teeth by the MSM should soon begin, then we’ll really hear about what idiots we are.

And this so called “flight” of the Conservative Christians (CC) is really only a vocal opposition to ONE main candidate - Rudy. There may be some that are so anti-Mormon that they would not vote for Mitt, because he is a Mormon, but that is a small lot.

The only way for victory for conservatives is to treat the primary elections as if they were the general elections.

Instead of the horrific Rudy! vs Hillary! scenario that everyone keeps trotting out to scare all of into voting for Rudy - if we don’t want to have to live through that - this is what we have to do:

WE MUST DEFEAT RUDY IN THE PRIMARIES!! Once we have done this, this our nominee will, most likely be someone that we can all live with and vote for.

It is simple math - another candidate must garner enough votes to get more than Rudy in the primaries. If we all vote for the best candidate - then we risk the danger of diluting our votes for several smaller candidates & Rudy wins by having the support of the bigger bloc.

WE MUST START LINING UP BEHIND ONE OR TWO CANDIDATES THAT CAN GET THE MOST VOTES. Conservatives need to start deciding who that person is really soon, so that candidate can get some good momentum going before the primaries.

I will do anything to keep Rudy from being our nominee, even if it means NOT voting for the candidate that I think is the best choice - not if that candidate doesn’t have a chance to win. I think everyone knows that my candidate of choice is Duncan Hunter - but I would vote for Fred Thompson to knock Rudy out.

Having said that, I do not want Hunter to drop out of the race - WE NEED HIS VOICE AT THE DEBATES! When they do give him a chance to speak, he addresses important issues and he keeps them on the table. He also positions himself to be a VP choice or, in my opinion, where he can do the most good - as Secretary of Defense.

I’m not saying this to be against Duncan Hunter - he is by far - the best choice - but he doesn’t have the numbers to sustain a victory. However, if we who loyally support the lower tier candidates start lining up behind Thompson, or possible Romney (whoever starts to get the most momentum), that candidate’s numbers will go up & will be enough to beat the Rudybeast!!!

But what would that gain, other than to put him in the same boat as the ever-shifting Romney? I cannot envision ever casting a vote for Guiliani anyways, but if he suddenly does a 180 on abortion this late in the game, I don’t see that as helping him any.
