Fred Drift: The muddled progress of the late-breaking candidate.
Slate ^ | October 24, 2007 | John Dickerson

Posted on 10/24/2007 5:06:15 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Fred Thompson has it all figured out. Speaking to a group of female business leaders in Florida, he said, "I'm kind of a laid-back guy, but I've been hardworking and successful for a long, long time. I don't have to prove myself to anybody. I've done pretty well being me. And me is all they're going to get."

This is either refreshing or hubris. It could be a stab at turning laziness into a virtue or an irritated refusal to modify a strategy founded on the faulty notion that a candidate can win without months of grueling hustle. Or maybe Thompson just has a quality voters find attractive in presidential candidates: He knows his own mind.

There have been scattered signs to support the more favorable thesis. Thompson wasn't afraid to talk about reducing the growth of Social Security benefits even in retiree-rich Florida. When asked about the Terry Schiavo controversy/debacle, he didn't pander to social conservatives, even though he's desperately courting them. He said government had no business meddling in whether her life support stayed on. This reminded me of his kiss-off to Dr. James Dobson, the radio host who diagnosed Thompson as "un-Christian" even though he'd never met the man. When Thompson was asked whether he would meet with Dobson in an effort to win him over, the candidate said he'd be happy to receive an apology from the evangelical leader but that he wasn't going to ask for one. "I'm not going to dance to anyone's tune" were his words.(continued)

Someone please tell me why FRed's numbers keep going up, then? He is SURGING in Florida and VERY strong in the rest of the South, as well as right on Romney's heels in Iowa!

Not only that, he seems like he truly is his OWN man.
I may not agree with him all the time but it does seem to be refreshing to hear some one speak his own mind rather than pander to all the different groups, that EACH may be supporting him.

The conservatives are going to realize that Fred is the only conservative with a chance to win the nomination. Rudy, McCain, and Romney aren’t conservatives, no matter how many times they say they are.

They're not.

RealClearPolitics has a composite of the national polls which also shows Thompson's marked dropped since his announcement. He's down below pre-announcement highs already and still dropping. He's only one point above they day before he announced and has lost all of the ground that he gained since his announcement. Go here.

What are you so jolly about ?
It looks like McPain is starting to overtake Romney . I didn’t think it was possible , but it looks like that’s the case . Bad news for Romney ....

Spiff, realize his context. You’re quoting national polls, and he’s citing state polls. If you merely cut people’s quote that can be construed as dishonest...whether it is or isn’t.

Within his context he speaks some truth.

If Fred can take Florida , Rudy is done . If Fred can take South Carolina , Romney is done . They are banking on those states respectively , to win the nomination .

I googled the author and certainly understand why he has decided that Fred’s campaign has muddled progress. Fred’s growth in popularity is scary to many!:)

It looks like McPain is starting to overtake Romney .

The trend actually shows the opposite - Romney it about to overtake McCain.

Please, go look at the polls. They show that McCain has been ahead of Romney for a little over a month, with one day or so about a week ago had Romney 1 point ahead of McCain and then back down a point. And now they're neck and neck.

Looks like Joe Carter, of www.blogsforfred.com, and evangelical outpost.com, agrees with the writer of the Slate article.

i think this is why gov. crist has not endorsed Giuliani.

I also think this is why the MSM is pushing the dead end candidates like Huckabee or ronpaul. (I would say hunter but he has many supporters here who do not want to hear that a candidate with less than 160k has no chance.)

It is all about tactical splitting of votes.

McPain endorsed Crist when he was running for Gov because he knew how important Florida will be . Crist has not returned the favor as of yet .

First off, you need to put down the pom-poms for a second and take a cold hard look at the real odds by those who are putting money down on who will be the nominee ... Thompson:

Romney:

Guiliani:

Thompson fell off a cliff in the Intrade odds. I dont know why. The polls are NOT showing any Thompson surge, it seems Huckabee and McCain are doing better and thompson and Rudy are stagnant ... and maybe that is the problem for Thompson - he should be displacing these others and collecting conservative support, and he's not.

With continued splits in conservative votes, Rudy is the winner. I was saddened to hear Guiliani is leading in Texas. Maybe these are moderates and indies, or maybe people want a little more 'ooomph' in a candidate than someone who seems pretty self-satisfied win or lose. How will we stop the Rudy steamroller? And who will do it?

This is a SLATE article? I honestly believe that the LEFTIES or the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD people who don’t know which way they’ll turn are scared to death of Fred.

Fred numbers continue to climb and will continue to climb. As Fred goes before the camera, speaks, and continues to present his platform, Fred’s numbers will climb.

BUT, expect the attacks to get worse. They fear Fred.

As I keep pointing out, Intrade is now primarily British because our idiot Republicans banned online gambling (which covered Intrade)

If that's true, it explains a lot. What lefty Brit would bet on a slow-talking, conservative Southern candidate?

That's ol' Fred, folksy and lazy. It's like they're describing Foghorn Leghorn.

You know, I like that whole laidback thing. I like the calm considered approach.

Rudi and McCain are loose cannons, volatile, autocratic. Both make me nervous. Fred & Mitt far less so.

But Rudi went several times to campaign for him and raise money with those snowbird New Yorkers.

I think Crist endorses Rudi but might wait to see if Fred or Mitt rise sharply in the next month or so. Crist wants to wait to endorse the winner but he wants to endorse while the candidate still needs his help.

Crist might just sit back and support the nominee after the mess is over . At this point I can’t say that I would blame him .
