Rethinking McCain
RealClearPolitics Politics Nation Blog ^ | 10/26/2007 | Reid Wilson

Here's an intriguing thought: With Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson spending little time in Iowa, virtually ceding the territory to Mitt Romney, there are still a lot of undecided voters looking for a candidate. That vacuum isn't right for a Ron Paul -- caucus-goers are too traditionally Republican. Mike Huckabee's doing all he can to fill it, but he doesn't have the money. And try as they might, no one is seriously considering Duncan Hunter or Tom Tancredo.

(snip)

If they didn't think so , we wonder why McCain's people have dropped two rounds of mail, hitting more than 100,000 households, in the past two weeks. Jonathan Martin has copies of both. McCain doesn't have to win in Iowa, and given the commitment Romney has shown to the state, he likely won't. But a strong second-place showing would make McCain an important part of the stories for the next week. It would be just the boost McCain needs going into New Hampshire.

We've said it before, we'll say it again: Don't count McCain out of this race. He's going to be a difference-maker, one way or another (By the way, we argued that very point in an article today).

Honestly, I am rethinking McCain. He has an ACU rating over 80% and while there is lots I disagree with him on, he is by far more conservative than Romney, Guiliani, and maybe even Huckabee.

I just re-thought McCain. It still came out “no”.

Agreed - As much as I hated to see him against the GWB tax-cuts and his back stabbing MSM sucking up.....

Outside of Thompson (and Rudy to a degree) he is still there in my mind as a somewhat reasonable choice (given the current conditions of the world and the ilk of the DEM leadership).

Sure, it would be lovely to have a President who shrieks profanities at senators, opens the borders completely, and wanders around waving a lightsaber and claiming to be Luke Skywalker.

I don’t vote for insane people.

Where do you get that stuff?

Shrieks profanities - uhhh, Cheney
Opens borders - Bush, Reagan
Wanders/waving - Huh? When

I LOVE what I hear McCain saying - he sounds like a WARRIOR

While some might opening the borders completely and wandering around waving a lightsaber and claiming to be Luke Skywalker to be the acts of insane man, shriking profanities at senators is certainly not an insane act. Watch a bit of your typical senator on TV and you might also find yourself shriking a bit.

Honestly, a McCain presidency would actually cut some spending, at least he wouldn’t be wild with the budget like Bush. He is the closest link to the Reagan conservatives in this field. And he’s pretty solid on the social issues. Plus he’d go after the Muslims. My problem with Thompson is he seems a little distant and withdrawn. And I’m a Southerner, so don’t tell me that’s how they are, but maybe he will show a little more energy soon.

Don’t get me wrong...I’m no McCain cheerleader, in fact the no torture crap pissed me off...I’ll go with Bud Day on that issue. But in reality, especially against Guiliani or Romney I’ll take my chances with at least somebody who has actually been a conservative.

Maybe the worst was joining with Kerry to make sure any live MIA/POW will never see the light of day.

McCain/Kerry normalizing relation with Viet Nam without total proof that there are no live remaining POWS/MIAS.

Not voting for McCain..... I forgive you Mr. McCain for the past many years of continually sticking your finger in conservatives eyes to get even for them not electing you.

Now your ugliness against RUMMY, not quite to the forgiving level yet.

They have planned so long for a Hillary/McCain race. They have all of their stories written to simply destroy him when the time comes. Then conservatives simply refused to play along and they cannot accept it...nor can John McCain.

Well, too bad.

W was really more Herbert than Barbara. I look at the field and the past, Mcain is the least repulsive so far. He is far from perfect BUT so are those others. And get this I am no neophyte, and I don’t want Edwards, Clinton Obama etc as president! In fact I am ready to go away, leaving this country, I just can not spend another 8 years like 92-00 .series

Even if I can overlook ALL the other B.S. McCain pulled in the last four years, McCain-Feingold is the one piece of legislation he cannot be forgiven for or over looked.

That legislation singlehandedly empowered the extreme left to destroy this country and the conservative movement.

For that he will never be POTUS

It’s not just a question of how conservative McCain is, although that’s certainly important enough.

A worse problem is that McCain is insane.

Clinton notoriously forgot about his aide with the nuclear football, hopped in his limo, and left the aide to walk across a dangerous part of DC carrying the nuclear football in his arms.

McCain, in contrast, would as likely as not push the buttons on the nuclear football, in a fit of rage. He is General Jack D. Ripper. Or maybe Captain Queeg.

I also have less sympathy for him as a POW or war hero, when I remember that he abused his position as chair of the committee to betray his fellow POW/MIAs. He denied they existed. He sold them out. To me, that was unforgiveable.

And there’s plenty more, if we want to start rummaging around.
