As the US prepares for what is arguably the most open presidential election since 1928, the last time there was no incumbent president or vice-president on the ballot, the Daily Telegraph's Washington correspondents compile a list of the 100 most influential Liberals and Conservatives in America...

LOL, what is Larry Craig doing on the list??? Craig had to be one of the least known Senators prior to his bathroom antics. Craig should not be on a list around such people as Coulter, Noonan, Jeb Bush, Malkin.
BTTT
Who was the incumbent president or vice president on the ballot in 1952?
Interesting - got an error message when trying to pull up the conservative list; no problem with the liberal side of things. Undoubtedly they’re being flooded with FReepers. /grin
Truman wouldn’t run so the Dems nominated Adlai Stevenson. Repubs ran Ike. No, I’m not old enough to remember - looked it up!
You’re right! In 1952, the Republicans ran Eisenhower and Nixon; the Democrats ran Stevenson and John Sparkman. None were incumbents.
Little remembered, but Harry Truman wanted to run for the 3rd term in 1952. He was so unpopular that defeat seemed likely, especially after Ike declared as a Republican candidate.
Estes Kefauver defeated Truman in the NH primary in early March. Machine Democrats despised the reformer Kefauver. Truman persuaded the reluctant Adlai Stevenson to run.
why isn’t the focus of other countries not on one simple fact, the last major election in the USA was not to govern, but to produce campaigners for the next presidential election
The list of conservatives won’t open! Of course the Libbys are all there, WITH PICTURES.
The conservative list 81-100 opens fine. The new one today of 61-80 may be a bad link, or a very busy server.
Of course, you just scroll down for the 81-100 list. The link to the 61-80 list is now working.
Truman wasn’t on the ballot, whether he wanted to run or not. You don’t have to go back to ‘28 to find the situation that we are in now.
If Michelle Malkin and Erick Erikson are on there, you can best that JimRob will be on there. Probably ranked somewhere around Matt Drudge. Methinks Rush Limbaugh will be in the top ten, maybe even top 5
RPaul, Savage, O’Reilly, Craig, Chertoff, and Kissinger???
Yes, Ron Paul makes the list. As he should.
Truman was unpopular because he had just fired Gen. Douglas MacArthur from his Korean command. Ironic. Truman was attempting to chip away at MacArthur’s credibility so he wouldn’t be a threat in the ‘52 race
and instead, it ruined his own chances at reelection.
Interesting line up...
And how they are classified on the front page is a bit telling:
“Leaders on the Left: 61-80 81-100”
“Principal players on the Right: 61-80 81-100”
I am so glad the British media have a take on this...Like its going to really matter...
So the “Left” has “Leaders”, and the “Right” has “Principle players”...
Can anyone here recite any “Liberal Leaders” or “Principle players” in Great Britain besides that Tony Blair guy, and the transplanted Beckham’s???
And no the rest of the Spice Girls don’t count...
Like that really matters...
I do like how they are holding out on the 1-60 list on both sides of the aisle for now...By pulsing us, just in case they miss someone...
Should be interesting to see what they come up with...
Sort of, Truman wouldn't run, Ike decided he was going to run as a republican, then they turned to Stevenson, but originally, both parties wanted Ike, and Ike chose the GOP.
