"As Governnor I deputized our state police to be able to enforce immigration laws throughout the state and when a bill came to my desk saying that the children of illegal aliens were going to get a tuition break at school I vetoed that. I insisted on English immersion in our schools," Romney said. "So during the years we are talking about I was fighting to protect legal immigration and end illegal immigration. Sen. Thompson as I recall was a United States senator. What was he doing on this issue when he was in the Senate? I think he's a Freddy come lately on the immigration issue..." Romney later gave credit to Rep. Tom Tancredo for the original idea.

Ok so Romney did the right thing by not granting ILLEGAL special priveledges, but the biggest problem remained THEY WERE ILLEGAL, AND THEY WEREN’T DEPORTED!
Wow, after all that time as governor he finally decides to “Combat” the illegal Immigration the last month of his term as Governor.
How convenient since he was already running for President.
Apparently he could not find the time sometime earlier in the previous 8 years.
I also support the presidential candidate with a history of taking the most strident position against them. That is why I support Rep. Duncan Hunter.
I wish more people were like you, thanks for doing the job the government won't do.
He was still recovering from that beat-down Uncle Teddy gave him in '94. ROFL
It seems that I’ve read / heard about more than one Mitt-revelation just before leaving office...Huckster’s recent conversions are just as suspect...ie Illegals.
Please name some actual effects of Romney's action.
Please name some actual effects of Romney's action.
Romney did more to combat illegal immigration and to fight those pushing for reforms in Mass than just the state troopers.
Do the research.
Fred hasn’t been in the SENATE since this IMMIGRATION stuff finally hit the fan, so to speak.
Tancredo is running on one issue, an important issue, but one issue.
As Mr. GQ (Mitt), exactly what has he done to stop the influx of ILLEGALS into this country?
N O T H I N G !
I’d like every candidate to emulate Tom Tancredo on pretty much every issue.
That no longer occurs much, because the people who were attacking him were not conservatives, and are now gone.
What's a "nigmanog"? We should have a definition, Fred or Jeri will probably be called that eventually.
See the Oxford English Dictionary - it’s not in Webster’s. Neither is it pleasant.
“How is Fred revising history with his recent proposal regarding illegal immigration?”
On a path to citizenship: “[B]ecause we allowed ourselves to wait until we woke up one day and found 12 million illegals here, there’s no easy solution. And I think that you have to realize that you’re either going to drive 12 million people underground permanently, which is not a good solution. You’re going to get them all together and get them out of the country, which is not going to happen. Or you’re going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship, but not make it so easy that it’s unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law.” (Fox News’ “Hannity & Colmes,” 4/3/06)
On the problems with cracking down on employers: “We haven’t enforced the law, in terms of employers. For 20 years, we’ve not enforced the law, and that’s a part of the problem. You can’t enforce it all on the backs of the employers. People falsify information that they give employers and all that. That’s not a solution to the problem.” (Fox News’ “Hannity & Colmes,” 4/3/06)
On his skepticism of a brick-and-mortar border fence: FOX’s ALAN COLMES: “You don’t put up a fence, either, do you? Is that bad neighbor policy, put a fence up?” THOMPSON: “If it would work. I mean, I don’t know that’s a technical problem. In this day and age, I would not think you would have to use bricks and mortar to get that job done. But we ought to do everything that we can to get it done to the extent that we can and then, as I say, I think people would be willing to take a look at the rest of the problem, what we do with the problem that we created.” (Fox News’ “Hannity & Colmes,” 4/3/06)
On enforcement first: “We woke up one day after years of neglect and apparently discovered that we have somewhere between 12 million and 20 million illegal aliens in this country. So it became an impossible situation to deal with. I mean, there’s really no good solution. So what do you do? You have to start over. Well, I’m concerned about the next 12 million or 20 million. So that’s why enforcement, and enforcement at the border, has to be primary.” (Fox’s “Fox News Sunday,” 3/11/07)
On not rounding up illegal immigrants: “You know, if you have the right kind of policies, and you’re not encouraging people to come here and encouraging them to stay once they’re here, they’ll go back, many of them, of their own volition, instead of having to, you know, load up moving vans and rounding people up. That’s not going to happen.” (Fox’s “Fox News Sunday,” 3/11/07)
I think it is nearly time for Romney to endorse Thompson’s candidacy. It’s time for some unity.
The “NumbersUSA” numbers are bunk, rejected on this site six months ago.
NumbersUSA is a liberal pro-abortion, anti-birth group that demands population reduction -— for the environment.
A look at the supposedly “bad votes” by Thompson are pretty enlightening at how silly it is -— just for example, Thompson got a bad grade for wanting immigration of highly-skileed, well-educated, people who would add a lot to the economy.
To non-hacks without an agenda, there is a huge distinction between legal immigrants who add and unskilled, uneducated, ILLEGAL immigration.
“Please name some actual effects of Romney’s action.”
Well, he’s tricked a lot of people into thinking he’s not a liberal.
