The matches shouldn’t have been available to this kid. Lighters, matches, oven lighters, all should be locked away

xxxxxxxx
Yeah that is soooo easy to say, but my 6 year old boy is smarter at finding and unlocking everything I try to keep away from him than I am at hiding it and the key, as I was, I was about 8 when my brother and I caught the field behind the house on fire, luckily the FD was only 1/4 mile away and it only singed less than an acre

Nobody said it was easy. I just said it’s important. If you have to lock items in a cupboard and keep that key on you at all times, then that’s what you have to do.

One fire can destroy your future and the future of everyone in your family. Whether anyone dies or not, the loss of your home would set you back years if not decades. And if someone does die, the kid will carry it with them for the rest of their life.

I’m just raising the issue. It’s not my intent to offend anyone.

One thing that seemed to help with my older son was that I said he could light matches as long as I was around. So if he felt that he wanted to do this he could just ask me. This probably wouldn’t work with every kid.
