PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A police officer was shot in the head at a Dunkin' Donuts shop Wednesday morning, a day after another officer was shot in the shoulder during a chase.

The officer injured in Wednesday morning's shooting was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not immediately known, according to Officer Raul Malveiro, a police spokesman.

The shooting came about 12 hours after a masked gunman shot Traffic Officer Mario Santiago in the shoulder during a chase downtown.

Santiago was responding to a report of a gunman in a sport utility vehicle shooting at another car, injuring two men and a woman, police said.

After Santiago chased the SUV, the gunman eventually got out of his vehicle and approached the squad car, firing twice through the window. Santiago was hit once in the right shoulder, police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said.

Santiago survived, but his condition was not known Wednesday morning.

The gunman in that shooting apparently jumped into the Schuylkill River, where searchers later recovered a body.

KYW reporting that officer shot this morning is in extremely critical condition.

Supervisors on the scene ordered to the hospital, not looking good.

Prayers up.

I just saw the police chief on TV saying that the proliferation of guns on the streets was the reason these policemen were shot. Funny, I thought it was a result of the proliferation of low-life cretons on the streets of Philadelphia.

I feel for the average policeman who has to entrust his life to the decisions of this idiot.

I am willing to bet both shooters had long criminal records and should have been in jail

sylvester johnson, the police chief, is an absolute disgrace. under his watch, murders have skyrocketed. he’ll be canned once nutter gets into office but its unbelievable hes lasted this long. actually its not so hard to imagine with a thug as mayor.

The City of Brothers Killing Eachother is now striking out at the Boys in Blue.

Nutter seems competant and is not a thug like J. Street. My big fear is that Nutter will let the machine push him around.

You have got to be kidding me. In this particular situtaion, even a blithering idiot like Sly "Muhamed" Johnson wouldn't say something like that.

Unless something's changed since I left for work, they were reporting that the shooter wrestled the cop's gun away.

Being a liberal means never having to think.

Nope, I'm not kidding. Also the report was that the enemy of society grabbed the officer's gun on the way out the door after he shot him.

No policeman worth his salt ever trusts anything to a political whore, er, I mean Police Chief. Chiefs come and go, but the street remains the street.
