smuggling+ (AP) - CHIBA, Japan, Oct. 31 (Kyodo)—Police have arrested a local staff member of the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia and a Garuda Indonesia Airline flight attendant on suspicion of helping three compatriots enter Japan illegally in September, they said Wednesday.
The two are Rosita Yulia Patricia Rembeth, 50, a member of the embassy staff, and the 39-year-old flight attendant Carrand Christo Tangka. The two, together with the three entrants, have already been indicted for violating Japan's immigration law.
According to the Chiba prefectural police, Rembeth and Tangka brought the three, who are Rembeth's relatives and friends, aboard a Garuda Indonesia plane on Sept. 9, and entered Japan through Narita airport near Tokyo carrying fake passports.
Tangka asked a local group engaged in counterfeit operations to prepare fake passports for the three individuals, two Indonesian men and a woman.
Tangka became acquainted with Rembeth through relatives around July last year, they said.
The three, aged 29 to 32, paid Tangka between 500,000 to 700,000 yen as compensation, according to the police who suspect the three came to Japan to work.
