More than 22,000 dolphins are slaughtered by fishermen in Japan every year. The hunt continues despite worldwide condemnation.

In Taijie, more than 2,000 mammals are slaughtered in the season.

Many Japanese believe dolphins should be treated like fish. They have been hunting dolphins for centuries and see any criticism of this as an attack on their culture.

Sounds like somebody needs to be a little more tolerant of cultural diversity.

We slaughter cows and pigs and chickens for food, and nobody raises a stink about that, except for the PETA types, but kill some cute little dolphins and suddenly there’s outrage.

Dolphins are incredibly intelligent. Some even say the cerebral cortex is more highly developed than in humans. There have been countless reports of dolphins protecting humans from shark attack. For me it's just different with dolphins.

Put me on the side of the dolphins, too. Its a shame that when humans and certain species interact, such as whales and primates, the non-humans are able to recognize in us a fellow intelligent being, yet we are incapable of doing the same.

I've had dolphins come up to me while scuba diving. Though they could have rammed and killed me easier than they do sharks, they never show humans aggression. Instead they are both immensely curious and funloving. It is a shame we can't extend them the same courtesy.

Now the swordfish I had for dinner last night is another story...

Basically what it boils down to is the cuter the animal is, the more people care and the less people consume it for food.

Dennis Leary had a great bit on that.

“She willingly put herself in danger.”

Hayden is invincible. She cannot die. Her body regenerates when she is injured.
Perfect person for the mission.

I never considered intelligence to be cute or thought others saw it like that.

I'll quote Rush Limbaugh, "Show me one hospital built by dolphins."

Show me a human who can carry on more than three simultaneous conversations (no jokes please). Besides, Rush is hardly the kind of guy who should be joking about what it means to be intelligent.

I don’t understand why the Japanese have to eat dolphins. Did they run out of puppies?

And people in India wonder why we have to eat cows.

Dolphin should be farm raised and fed nothing but mayonnaise and pickles so they can be slaughtered into tuna salad.

Dolphin and porpoise steaks are real good.

If they taste anything like the whale I've had (and I'm sure they do), then no, dolphin and porpoise steaks are horrible. But the Japanese have different tastes than I do.

if she really wants to stop the “murder,” she ought to sell all her 800 dollar surfboards and provide an alternative way for these fishermen to support their families. you can bet THEY don’t get welfare for just deciding not to work... if some hollywood upstart went gliding by in her 400 dollar wet suit to scare away my livelihood, i think i’d shove a pointy stick in her direction, too...
