The left can no longer afford to bury the migration debate
The Guardian ^ | Wednesday October 31, 2007 | Jenni Russell

For years, the vast majority of politicians in the main parties have avoided having honest public conversation about the extent and consequences of immigration. The fear of appearing racist, or giving any ground to the arguments of the far right, has left most MPs and commentators in Pollyanna territory - extolling the economic and cultural benefits of immigration and glossing over problems. That has done the nation no favours, because the consequences of rapid social change have been scarcely studied, let alone addressed. And it has increased many people's distrust of the political universe, as the gulf between their own experience and the bland assertions of leaders has grown.

Now that gulf has grown too big to be ignored. This week the government admitted substantially undercounting the foreign nationals who have come here to work in the past 10 years. Last night the Home Office almost doubled its original estimate to 1.5 million workers, and acknowledged that those workers had filled more than half the jobs created since 1997. Meanwhile polls show that only 3% of the country thought immigration an important issue 10 years ago; this month the figure was 41%.

What politicians have to address is that workers will inevitably be attracted here as long as we have jobs to offer. The movement of labour, following the free movement of capital, is a fact of the modern world. But the reason that there is such an appetite for migrant workers here is simple: they offer more highly skilled labour, at a cheaper price, than their British equivalents. Often migrants are working illegally, at below the minimum wage, or having their wages skimmed by gangmasters. There has been almost no political will to prosecute companies or individuals engaged in these practices, since the political priority has been cheap products.

Why does the image of Gulliver awaking to find that the Lilliputians have bound him to the ground with hundreds of tiny ropes come to mind?

I might add that the RINOs, including Bush, should also engage in a similar way, since it is not just Dems who wish to ignore immigration laws to fulfill their own agenda.

Whether you believe it is literally true or simply a parable designed to explain why people speak different languages, there is a very good reason why the Bible depicts the speaking of many languages as a curse from God designed to create discord and make it difficult, if not impossible, for people to work together toward a common goal.

Me too!

Who gives a damn if Hillary! appoints two SCOTUS Judges that will be in office judging all sorts of cases, including illegal immigration cases, for the next 30 years? NOT ME! Screw them.

We've got 50 million Mexicans here too, not 12 million.

Illegal aliens will not come to Oklahoma or anywhere else if there are no jobs waiting for them. They will not stay here if there is no government subsidy,” said the law’s sponsor, Oklahoma Rep. Randy Terrill, a Republican who believes the measure will make illegal immigrants “self deport.”

Rep Terrill has nailed it. Wish our pretty hair Governor here in Texas would follow suit.

“Sticks and stones can break my bones; but words can never hurt me.”

People need to get over the word racism. It doesn’t mean a damn thing in the grander scheme of things.

And according to a program at the U of Delaware http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1918804/posts the word ‘racist’ apparently now only means ‘white person.’

Britain is like the canary in the coal mine for the US. Our system is mirroring theirs. Subsitute mexicans for romanians and you have a parallel. To quote a famous person, ‘we have met the enemy and it is us’. Liberal ‘compassion’ will be the death of our way of life.

You ar so right!!. There are at LEAST 50 million here.

When Reagan’s amnesty went throught they said about 1 million were here. In actuality 3 million were legalized.

The Al-Guardian states the obvious, but still cannot bring itself to use the term “Illegal Immigration” to describe the problem.

Membership with the EU makes it legally impossible to stop illegal immigration and saying Britain needs to leave the EU to deal with the problem is still a “Thought-Crime” for the Left.

This will remain the case even after the local Islamists start blowing up British citizens by the hundreds on a regular basis.

Same old story: the lowest costs are the only value for the free market, open borders types.
