ODESSA, Texas (AP) - President Bush's former deputy chief of staff, Karl Rove, says the government will need a temporary worker program to be successful with immigration reform.

Rove said the program is needed reduce pressure on the nation's border security apparatus. But he says the details of such a program haven't been explained to the American public well.

He also says the U.S. Border Patrol will need to be doubled and its budget tripled with 300 miles of fence built.

The comments came yesterday as part of the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute's Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa.

About the 2008 presidential race, Rove said he favored the Republican nominee but said Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton could have a chance of winning because she has "a machine around her."

You only had eight years to do it, Karl.

There are a whole lot of things y'all failed to explain well. Even when you had it right. Which in this case you didn't.

I would add a few conditions such as temporary stay, no children, and financial assistance pledge for health care. I am not sure how these and other conditions would be enforced. Adding conditions increases the cost of guest workers leading to incentives to cheat. Cutting off welfare for guest workers and illegals is necessary.

The rats will never agree to a guest worker program that removes incentives. The rats want more welfare and government dependency. Illegal aliens are the best customers for the rat plans.

A temporary worker program is needed? As usual the egg heads in DC(aka intellectual/cultural elite)have it backwards.First:1)Start deporting the illegals already here.2)Build a wall, barbed wire, electronic suveilance, whatever it takes to secure the border.3)Hire additional border guards as needed. Then we can talk about a “temporary worker program”.

Here’s a clip with the details on Bush’s original plan:

Just how horrific a scheme that was didn’t get the attention it deserves. They wanted it to be open to almost every type of job.

Karl Rove, says the government will need a temporary worker program to be successful with immigration reform.

One can only shudder at the thought of what Karl Rove imagines success with immigration reform to be.

Amnesty for 20 million, continued illegal inflow, add additional temporary worker program on top.

Actually, this so called "Temporary Worker Program" is nothing new in the US.

There has been a Temporary Work Program Visas in effect with the USINS for at least the past 40-50 years.

Why don't they just use those.

I have also been puzzled by the issuing of drivers licenses to illegals in this country.

Don't they have licenses to drive from their country of origin? If they don't, couldn't they just apply for an international drivers license?

Why do we need more bureaucracy?

Add:

5) You work in an industry that has a documented need.

6) You can never ever become an American citizen (OK, maybe for VERY exceptional circumstances with congressional approval).

7) You are entitled to no public benefits, including government schools for your children. Speaking of which...

8) You agree not to have children here, and if you do you are immediately deported and charged with all the expenses associated with the birth.

9) You pay all taxes including social security, but you never can collect social security.

10) A portion (10%?) off your gross earnings goes into an account maintained by your employer sponsor to pay for any damages assessed against you (auto wrecks, etc.). If 4 years after you complete the temporary worker stint and have returned to your country of origin there are no claims, you get the money, without interest.

We all remember when Karl didn’t want to talk about illegal aliens. Tancredo especially remembers when he was told by Rove not to darken the white house door.

The only “temporary” plan that would possibly fly would be for seasonal farm workers who would come for a few months for the harvest and then return home. Other than possibly that - NO WAY, NO HOW!!!!!

Tancredo stated this on TV in this Republican debate. I heard it. You can read about it here:

I have no trouble with temporary workers if: 1) We know who you are 2) We know where you are living 3) We know what you are doing 4) You are not voting or breaking the law. 5) You come here legally with a work sponsor 6) You don't bring family, much less extended family 7) You leave when the sponsored job is completed

8) Offspring created while in the USA do not automatically become citizens of this country.
