ODESSA, Texas (AP) - President Bush's former deputy chief of staff, Karl Rove, says the government will need a temporary worker program to be successful with immigration reform.

Rove said the program is needed reduce pressure on the nation's border security apparatus. But he says the details of such a program haven't been explained to the American public well.

He also says the U.S. Border Patrol will need to be doubled and its budget tripled with 300 miles of fence built.

The comments came yesterday as part of the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute's Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa.

About the 2008 presidential race, Rove said he favored the Republican nominee but said Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton could have a chance of winning because she has "a machine around her."

Yeah, about 120 days max.

You can’t bring your family.

You can pick up your pay in Mexico City.

One day, we’ll all awaken to the fact that Karl Rove was a one-man, walking, talking Potemkin Village. Frankly, I completely lost patience with him when he accepted the accolades for Bush’s 04 victory knowing all the while that it was the Swift Boat vets who put Bush back in; Rove failed at the task. On almost every issue except Iraq, his advice was anti-conservative up and down the line.

Even his retirement reeked of hypocrisy: he didn’t do it “for the family;” he did it because getting out while Bush is still in office enables him to charge more for his consulting fees.

He is a bad apple — to the core. (And no, I am not a liberal or a DU agent.)

Karl Rove’s genius has really failed him on the immigration issue.

Rove's 'genius' resides solely in packaging BS in an appealing manner.

“This is what happens when you have a purely poliitical hack calling the shots.”

You mean the evil Genius. The person who for 4 years was called “Rove you maginificent bastard” by almost everyone on this site? The man who engineered the 2002 and 2004 election?

That political hack?

That stupid ass doesn’t realize we have one? It’s an attachment to a passport called a work authorization. You get sponsored and it takes only 3 months. It’s faster than a green card by 6 months. Bush has a Harvard MBA and hired people like this?

Rove like Jimmy Carter should just stay quiet, they have both done enough damage to our country.

Whew, thank you! When I saw there was a response, I put on my asbestos suit and awaited the worst from the Rovebots. What a relief.

"Amnesty for 20 million, continued illegal inflow, add additional temporary worker program on top." That's wrong. The Social Security Administration said there are 40 MILLION fraudulant SSN's in use. Assume there are 40 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIENS here.

Not a Rovebot. Just recall seeing everytime Bush beat the libs at something the picture of George C Scott and the quote, “Rove you magnificent bastard”

It was all over the place. Now that he is gone, he is a moron. Just remember, if it wasn’t for the “political hack” Kerry would be up for reelection in 08.

“. . . man who engineered the 2002 and 2004 election?”

Are you serious? In 2004 Karl Rove turned what should have been a landslide victory of a war-fighting President over a dilettante moron traitor into a near loss.

Not to be outdone by that failure, he also set the Republicans up for a loss of Congress in 2006 and a probable Democrat blowout in 2008, thanks to his amnesty plan.

No Karl we understand Bush's amnesty and "promised" border security very well, that's why it was overwhelmingly rejected.

Successfully securing the borders will likewise reduce the pressure on the nation's borders. Nobody will be lining up to run across a border if it's a certainty that they will fail to enter the US and that doing so will only harm their chances to get in legally.

Once the federal government proves to America that they are serious about illegals and that the borders are truly secure, that will open the doors to small guest worker plans and even a small DREAM act type amnesty, but the magnificent bastard Karl Rove just can't seem to understand that.

The proof came out of Tancredo's own mouth during one of the candidate debates.

He said it....I believe it.

Set up 50cal bunkers along the border with remote video feed. Then, sell time slots to pre-screened members of the general public so they can surveil the border from their home computers and remotely aim and fire the guns at any invaders they spot. It would be like a “reality video game”, and I bet it would cover its own cost without burdening taxpayers.

Guys,

I just want to hear some answers for the demographic realities that are not glib waves of the hand.

1) We do not and are not going to have enough working age US citizens to do all the work that needs doing. Too few workers will cut growth and America will lose its economic dominance in the world.

2) Europe has even fewer, so any incentive of expanding legal immigration for Europeans *with skills* will fail because their own governments will outbid. The line you hear about of people waiting to get in will disappear if we actually let them in — not because they got in but because their home governments would immediately fund incentives to stop any such drain. So expansion of legal immigration will not solve the problem — and note especially that legal immigration demands skills of immigrants. The jobs in question that need doing are unskilled. Paying more for unskilled labor makes the product built non competitive with imports.

3) So with these realities, how do we get enough workers to fill the jobs. No, the welfare rolls are NOT filled with lazy layabouts. They are filled with single white mothers who can’t afford to take those jobs AND pay child care. So where do the workers come from?

In the end I can’t see any possible way not to have a well regulated, strictly policed guest worker program. Demographics won’t allow anything else.
