"an outspoken former chief"He was former for a reason. If he keeps it up he'll be described as formerly of this world.

(He was shouting 'Allah!' but I didn't hear that. It just sounded like a lot of crap to me.)

Musharaf is taking on the heroin smugglers straight away.
This can only lead to drastic increase in violence in the coming days.

I’ve lost track of the list of ‘players’ in Pakistan — is this Gul guy from the pro-taliban wing of the ISI??

Thank you...
I thought - and hoped - this might be the case, perhaps signalling an end to Musharraf’s de-facto policy of coexistence with the Islamist factions.....
I never was completely comfortable with a strong pro-Taliban/AQ presence in a nuclear-armed country....

I don’t trust Musharraf either, but who does one trust in Pakistan?

” I don’t trust Musharraf. “
I don’t exactly ‘trust’ anybody in that part of the world...
To misquote: “He may be a slimy, opportunistic dictator, but he’s OUR slimy, opportunistic dictator...”
As far as seeing how this shakes out — this move by Musharraf has a very real chance of backfiring, and instead of increasing stability, foment open revolt....
And those nukes still make me nervous.....
