Not meaning to condone illegals at all, but if we went to work in Mexico, we would want to stay Americans with our own culture. I can't see myself wanting to assimilate into being a Mexican.

If you went to work in Mexico, you would enter legally and follow the laws of the country while you were there. You would know that you were only there temporarily, so would feel no need to assimilate. If you are there on a two-year contract and always plan to go back home or to another country there is really no need to assimilate.

But, if you immigrated to Mexico and planned to raise your family there and send your children to Mexican schools and live there as a citizen of Mexico, you would have a totally different outlook. While you might never fully assimilate you would still learn the language and try to blend aspects of their culture into your own. You would try to give your children every advantage by making them learn the language and customs and make Mexican friends, so they would not be at a disadvantage and not feel their are not a part of their home country.

I hate when I do a lousy job of proofreading. Just so the grammar police don’t flip out on me - “their” was supposed to be “they are” in that last sentence.

Dalton is to carpet like Hickory, North Carolina is to furniture.”

I worked at a winston-Salem dye plant when there were no Mexicans there.

"Assimilation" is NEVER conscious. Different races/ethnic groups never assimilate in the same way.

Deport these folks NOW, simply on the principal of RULE OF LAW. (Expletive) the "cultural" issues. Even the Euro immigrants 100 years ago lived in SELF SEGREGATED urban ghettos.

Excellent post (#54), BP. Would that we could clone you to teach in all our schools!

"I believe that the rats will permanently alter the landscape in judges, immigration, energy policy, taxes, entitlements, health care, litigation, racial preferences, unions, and defense."
~businessprofessor~

I do too.

That's why we must vote the Democrats out of office AT ALL COSTS!

There can be only ONE ISSUE in the 2008 election: DEFEAT THE DEMOCRATS!!!

Yorkie, I too "have been beyond shock with what this administration has continued to do to our country".

The Bush Administration has spent more of our money than any President since Lyndon Johnson! Bush increased entitlements and refused to enforce U.S. immigration laws, halt illegal immigration, or close the U.S. Borders.

The Republican Congress and Administration gave Congress to the Democrats on a silver platter in 2006 completely because of their foolish, unnecessary, inexcusable, and politically suicidal policies.

I too am beyond shock and am utterly disillusioned with the Bush Administration.

However--if the Democrats should seize power in 2008, they will be FAR WORSE!

As Businessprofessor wisely expressed it in his post #54:

"The rats will permanently alter the landscape in judges, immigration, energy policy, taxes, entitlements, health care, litigation, racial preferences, unions, and defense."

He's right.

We must prevent this with every fiber of our being. We owe it to our nation, to our fathers and mothers, to ourselves, to the world, and--most of all--to our children.

We can not allow the Democrats to destroy the United States. And--if they can--they will.

Thank you, SB. You said it far better than I could.

There are many things that you didn’t mention about what this administration has ‘accomplished’, to the detrement of it’s citizens........but, I think most people already know.

It goes against my grain to not be respectful, when speaking of our leaders. I will leave it at that.

I agree - the Democrats will finish off, what we have treasured all our lives - our sovereignty.

I agree completely. It's a different thing to go and work temporarily in another country to make money and then go home, and to go to another country to stay and become a citizen. They objectives are different and the outcome is different. If you're coming to America to make money to send home, that's one thing. If you want to become Americans, that's another thing.

I have a lot of respect for Mexico. When I was a senior in high school, I could have chosen to go to Europe and learn French or German, but instead I took Spanish every year and went for a summer in Mexico. I attended a Mexican school and lived with 2 Mexican families. A Mexican boy lived with my family for the summer.

I saw a lot of good things and a lot of culture shock. I saw acres of people living in shacks and cardboard boxes right outside of Mexico City while city dwellers had maids and cars. I saw people utterly destitute, with no hope of any salvation, and people with incredible wealth. Such is Mexico.

They have so many hard-working people and resources. They have everything they need to be middle class citizens, at least around the cities. But still today, 35 years after I was there, there are the rich, and there are the people sneaking across the border.

All the bluster about the Mexican government fighting the drug cartels is a load of crap. The drug cartels make billions, and they pay off the government. The government gets to claim a ton of drugs, while 10 tons come across the border, and palms get greased. Meanwhile, millions continue to live in cardboard boxes, and dream of sneaking across the border to run a weed eater.

How do you fix a system like that? We can't. Mexico has to fix it, and I don't see Calderon fixing it. He is busy at the tennis courts.

So do I. One less place for Californians to flee to.

Thanks for your compliment. I am somewhat disappointed with Bush but I am certainly not completely disillusioned. What are you so completely disillusioned with Bush about?

Bush has been consistent with most of his campaign promises. He campaigned as a compassionate conservative which means that he does not believe in small government. Bush campaigned as an amnesty supporter. Illegal immigration was not a hot button issue in 2000. His only competitor had the same amnesty position so there was no choice. My biggest disappointment is campaign finance reform. Signing that bill was a terrible mistake for the country and conservative movement.

I am disillusioned with the rinos in the senate who prevented progress on entitlements, energy development, health care, permanent tax reductions, and litigation reform.

I’ll tell you where ICE is? Right in the middle of all the corruption here. This town has gone to pots and big business, law enforcement, ICE, GBI, FBI and so on has allowed it. The word “corruption” in the dictionary should have Dalton GA as the meaning. We residents have screamed to everyone we know of and noone and I mean noone will listen. Money talks in this town at the taxpayer’s expense. Our schools systems have suffered, as well as quality of life with gangs, drive-bys, grafitti, murders, etc. We even have an ICE Agent here and his sole duty is to keep out the INS. God help us all because noone else will help us. The only thing going for us right now is Bobby Lee Cook’s RICO lawsuit against Mohawk Industries. This may be the only thing that saves us now.

Your story reminds me of what went on in the 1950s. Eisenhower had to replace or transfer a lot of the corrupt INS agents around the border who refused to enforce the law. We need someone who will do the same thing after 2008 and from what I see only Hunter, Tancredo, and possibly Thompson will do that. The rest of them I really believe we'll only get the status quo.

Please see post 29 and 37.

I (VOA) was not aware that Georgia had passed a measure to “bite down”
on the illegals.

Maybe with the actions in Oklahoma, Missouri and Georgia, fleeing ILLEGALS
will wake up folks north of The Mason-Dixon Line to the problem of
invaders from Mexico and points south.
(along with the other illegals/crimaliens invading the USA from just
about every point of the globe)

(Mea culpa-VOA)

I’m glad Georgia enacted those laws, but what’s it going to change about this place? They still seem pretty arrogant about flaunting the laws.
