Fred Thompson says "No" to Human Life Amendment

Fred Thompson told Tim Russert on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday that he DOES NOT support a Human Life amendment. That position is part of the GOP platform. Here’s what the 2004 GOP platform says:

"We must keep our pledge to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence. That is why we say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution and we endorse legislation to make it clear that the 14th Amendment's protections apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions." Here’s what Thompson said about it lifted from today’s Meet The Press transcript:

MR. RUSSERT: Let me ask you about an issue very important in your party’s primary process, and that’s abortion.

MR. THOMPSON: Mm-hmm.

MR. RUSSERT: This is the 2004 Republican Party platform, and here it is: “We say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution,” “we endorse legislation to make it clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. Our purpose is to have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions.” Could you run as a candidate on that platform, promising a human life amendment banning all abortions?

MR. THOMPSON: No.

MR. RUSSERT: You would not?

Nice.

You’re use of the word “please” was actually more condescending than your question. Civility should be our common commitment to one another - at least.

Given what I heard today from Fred, he will no more work to overturn Roe v. Wade than Rudy would. I have also heard Rudy use federalism in his answers to questions on abortion.

Bottom line, Thompson needed to be stronger on this issue to solidify conservative support to his cause. His weak answer makes that less likely.

Another objection to this type of amendment is that it might make it impossible to terminate pregnancies where the child is horribly defective, in cases of rape, and so on.

I think it should be opposed on those grounds alone.

Fred Thompson ‘08!

The federal government already sanctions and carries out murder - in the form of the federal death penalty.

Murder is when the INNOCENT are killed deliberately. You sound like a moron making statements like that.

“Quite interesting that Thompson has come out against the Pro-Life plank in the Republican platform...I wonder how the evangelicals will react in the South?”

Thompson has always been against that plank. Nothing new.

I disagree. But that’s cool.

Please refrain from name calling. That’s twice you’ve done that to me.

Cheers....

When you make a statement as asinine as this;

“Turns out Fred’s political position on abortion is the same as Rudy’s.”

I gave you all the civility that you deserved.

REALLY? I’m pro-life, but would you please explain where, in the Constitution, it says life begins at conception and that it is the role of the federal government to protect the unborn?

You’ve shown no evidence of that so far.

Nothing new for us on FR, but this is going to be quite a bombshell for some who haven’t been familiar with Thompson’s actual positions.

I have my opinion as to why, but its inappropriate for a public forum.

So I won’t post it.

I doubt that any American president will have the ability to overturn Roe v Wade. As I see it, returning it to the states for a vote gives us a chance to vote on it at the state level. Will that even happen? I do not know.

Abortion is murder. That is my sincere feeling. I am also very sincerely in doubt that Roe v Wade is ever going to get overturned.

The President doesn’t act on morals. He acts within the constraints of the Constitution. IIRC, murder is left to the states to deal with. Why is abortion different than murder?

You can make that argument about virtually everything. Let’s just do away with what remains of our federalist system, and become a dictatorship.

Federalism doesn't mean anything if there is no protection for life or liberty.

As President, Thompson would appoint strict constructionist judges

Giuliani said the same thing, and it was B.S. coming from him too.

Somebody who doesn't think that innocent babies qualify as "persons" whose life is protected by the 14th amendment has no business appointing anyone to the supreme court.
